alright i had a problem.... i was an evocationist that specialized in lighting (+caster level when using lighting spells [the energy affinity from UA])and i had memorized all my spells as lighting spells (energy substitution)...i know this was a stupid mistake on my part (a newb mistake heh)

anyway the DM sent a high DR and Lighting Immune monster at us and well 3 of the 5 party members died in the fight....

anyway i had an idea for a prestige class ability and the DM said it sounds good but put it on the boards and see what the pros say so here goes.

Black Lighting - You have learned to control lighting to the extent that you can enhance the second effect of lighting...Thunder, but at a cost to the power of the lighting.
You can substitute up to 50% of the lighting damage to sonic damage. (You would recieve this at level 5 of the PrC)

Greater Black Lighting - Your control on lighting has been mastered, you can now substitute up to 100% of the lighting dmg to sonic damage. (You would recieve this at level 10 of the PrC)

Overall, it would depend on the other abilities of the PrC. If that's all the PrC does; grant you a feat for 10 LEVELS?!?!...well, I'd allow that in my game. Post the rest of the PrC for a better analysis. I'm assuming that the PrC would do something else/grant other abilities as well... So show me the complete PrC and I'll let you know. :D

Is there a BAB progression? Is there a save progression? Will the PrC grant +1 caster levels every level? Every other level? At all? B/c as is, there isn't much info. If there is no caster progression, it's extremely weak. If there is a caster progression at every level...it might be too strong, depending on extraneous factors.

BTW, I'd change the name from Black Lightning if I were you. Black Lightning, IMHO, implies profane damage of some sort. Or an [Evil] spell discriptor. Consider 'Thunder and Lightning' or 'Aural Lightning' or something along those lines, to imply that it's a {Sonic} spell.

EDIT: Added third paragraph.

Sounds like a plan. Post the link or just PM me when it's done for an analysis.

There's a PrC template in my sig if you need one.

I wouldn't call it "Black Lightning". I'd call it "Thundering Spell" and make it do force damage too. Also, Lightning isn't a damage type. Electricity is.

wait! Call it:

Black Hammer/White lighting

"Black Hammer" for the thunder and "White Lighting" for the lightning

BTW: Willie Mays Hayes is Black Hammer; Jesse the body Ventura is White Lighting! ;)

Ooooh! Make the 5th level 1/2 sonic Aural Lightning, and call the 10th level full substitution one Cacophonous Bolt! Cha-chiing!

The secondary effect of lighting is heat, not thunder. However, black light produces far less heat than most other types of lighting, so I would not add much damage for that. Infrared light produces far more heat than ultraviolet, and would be a better choice.

What exactly does an immunity to lighting grant something? Is that like being invisible? Immune to suburst spells or what exactly?

And how much damage can a black light do anyway?
