Is there such a thing? What im going for is an Atamos(ff9)-like ability.

Sphere of Ultimate Destruction (9th level, various books) creates a temporary Sphere of Anihiliation (artifact, DMG).
Witch

No it doesn't. It creates a moving disintegration effect that resembles a Sphere of Annihilation to a limited degree.

Not to be nit picky, but just reword the flavor and call it a day...yesh. Mechanically, yes it's a disintegration effect, but really why not just call it a black hole and be done with it?

Don't forget Reality Maelstrom from the Spell Compendium.

I'm not saying it's not similar to a black hole effect. I'm saying it's not a Sphere of Annihilation.

Reality Maelstrom

I've seen it used to empty lakes of lava and remove pesky Dragons from the local plane of existence.

This is homebrew, but you're welcome to use it:

Gravity Flare
Evocation
Sor/Wiz 8
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Close
Area: 15 foot radius spread
Duration: Instantaneous
Save: Reflex partial
Spell Resistance: Yes
This spell causes gravity to spike incredibly for an instant in an area. All creatures and unattended objects in a 15 foot radius spread must succeed at Reflex saves or be drawn into the center of the flare and die. Success indicates that they instead take 5d6 damage and cannot move for 1 round, as Lesser Gravity Flare.

There's also Defenestrating Sphere from the Complete Arcane. Its an air effect that throws people around. You can modify that to resemble a vacuum effect.

Reality Maelstrom seems perfect. Maybe add a save or die and we're set.

Reality Maelstrom seems perfect. Maybe add a save or die and we're set. It's already "save or GTFO", and considering you could be sucked to the plane of water or negative energy, it's pretty much save or die.

I think it would be a bit worse to get chucked into the far realm, but maybe that's just me. But reality maelstrom is a hole in the material plane that sucks anyone into another of the planes. Depending on your cosmology it is basically save-or-die. Just make sure to have one person hover on the brink for a round or two and say "How do you stop it?" before being sucked in and don't forget their Oldsmobile.

And for wacky, 9th level spell mayhem, you could cast reality maelstrom and place your sphere of ultimate destruction in front of it.

Now THAT'S a black hole.

Minor Creation does not limit the weight of the stuff you create, only the size. So a 1-ft. diameter piece of wood weighing 10^36 lb is a theoretical possibility...

Yes, that's lame.

The difference is, do you want the effects or do you want an actual quantum singularity? A black hole spell would not be great for actually getting any form of treasure from your defeated and highly compressed opponents. While the wizard would be pleased with himself, the party would be ready to strangle him.

My suggestion is combine area bull rush effect with a disintegrate effect against the first target to reach the spell's origin point, which ends the spell. Since it is disintegrate with a different method of attack and a field control effect, you can make it 7th level. This gives all coolness of a black hole, while still leaving the gear behind.

I wouldn't accept anything but the 'real thing' :P

I think the 'sucking' power of a black hole is overrated. I mean, it's not like it actually sucks stuff in. It's just gravity. Suppose the black hole you created attracts people with the same strength as the gravity we're used to on this planet. Wikipedia says the mass of the earth is 5.9736×10^24 kg (multiply by ~2 to get pounds). That means your 'hole' has a similar weight (well, it can be lighter since you're not as far from it as you are from the center of the earth, I think, but I haven't done physics in quite a while), and it'll drop straight down to the center of the earth (and the earth will fall towards the black hole as well, so it's a 'meet me in the middle' kind of thing), rendering it useless. So in order to enjoy your hole (no pun intented...) you'd have to keep it from falling down. So you're lifting something that weighs quite a lot (let's be very conservative and estimate the weight of the black hole to be something along the lines of 10^12 lb). I say: why bother. Use that force to push your opponent(s) against the ground instead, and they die. A lot. :)

So you would prefer an actual collapsed star to a spell effect that mimics the "TV effects" of a fake one?

A planet does not have the mass to collapse upon itself.

That sucking sound is an illusion created by the game sucking at that point.

However, if you had a singularity the same mass as the planet you are on (without knowing the exact result of being near ground zero of a large gravity well) then "down" would be revectored so the ground would be at a 45 degree slope heading toward's the hole. The sucking effect comes with super gravities from dead collapsed stars as it adds any matter to its own mass and not an artificial smaller singularty (smaller being a relative term in one dimension). This kind of limited gravitational mass is described in the spell Reverse Gravity.

,,, just some thoughts.

AFAIK a black hole doesn't have a minimum weight - there is just a minimum weight requirement for them to be naturally created. So you could have a black hole that weighs less than our sun (which is also too light to form a black hole). You'd just have to put in some effort to create the thing.

Edit: The weight should be larger than 0, tho

There is a minimum mass. The minimum necessary to create a gravity well strong enough to break the bonds that holds atoms together. Unfortunately Star Trek is still not "science"

I think that reaction was uncalled for. Try reading this a bit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole
It says, among other things;
Since the Earth has a mean radius of 6371 km, its volume would have to be reduced 4 × 10^26 times to collapse into a black hole.

So it would be possible to make a black hole out of the earth - it'd just be quite challenging. Yes, it's a practical impossibility, and I doubt many people would actually WANT to do that. But don't bring up Star Trek just because you think it's wrong.

Fair enough. I am no expert on black holes or physics in general, but at least come up with a reasonable argument if you disagree with me.

A black hole can be defined as an object that is smaller than its so called Schwarzschild or gravitational radius, which is proportional to the object's mass. For a mass of 1kg, r~1.5*10^-27 meter which is about 10^12 times smaller than the radius of a proton. So, there is no minimal mass for a black hole* but the effort needed to compress an object enough that it becomes smaller than its gravitational radius is much larger for "light" objects. You can see this in a simplified situation. Consider a spherical object of constant density. If you increase the radius R of the sphere, the mass and therefore the gravitational radius increases like R^3 while the object size increases only linearly. So at some point the gravitaional radius will become larger than the object and you will get a black hole. Here in the "heavy=large" object case the R^3 law works for you, while it works against you if you go into the opposite direction and try to compress an object of a given size below its gravitational radius.

Also, funnily a small black hole would probably not appear to you as such, because there is also a temperature and a corresponding radiation associated with a black hole which is inversely proportional to its mass. So a small black hole would "evaporate" in a short amount time loosing all its mass through radiation.

*: If you take quantum effects into account, you would say that the minmal mass for a black hole is the mass for which the gravitaional radius is smaller than the minimal quantum mechanical lenghtscale associated with the quantum mechanical ground state of your system.

You are correct, I was snippy and I apologize. I also apologize to Star Trek. I simply draw a distinction between what is theoretically possible and what is likley. The existence of black holes is likely. Artificial black holes that are the mass of a planet are not likely as we know the theory. Possible, but not likely. It is about as useful as some of the builds on the CO boards.

Now is there a switch on this track that leads back to the main discussion?

Now look here, you all aren't thinking outside the box. Now, let me get my Epic Level handbook...

What? Seriously, Ah, here we are. A little epic spell seed, Even based on existing spells!...

So, Black Blade of disaster is a pretty neat effect that seems something like what we're looking for, but it lacks... Oomph. So, With a little work, we get the Epic Spell...

Yes, that's lame.

Wood of that density doesn't exist. You couldn't do that any more than you could use it to make magic wood that teleports from place to place, or wood that's always on fire and does fire damage, or wood that's as hard as adamantine.

.....

For that and also 1CentSage´s reply, i say: "Nothing like a little bit of physics to open up your mind..... if you save vs. insanety.." :P

Thank you both for helping easy my work´s stress with a little of that... :D

On the matter of magic:
-I´m not familiar with the Sphere of Ultimate Destruction spell, but seems by other´s comments that it suits the image. Add to it a modified Reverse Gravity like effect and you´d have the famous image/effect that´s given to black holes, if only a mini one...

-Another view could be the general effect of atraction/crushing/end-of-effect sequence (seen on some weapons in games like Descent (black-shark missile)).. such effect could be done by joining an atraction efect (Reverse Gravity) with compression damage (like Presure Sphere from StormWrack).

-While i also am not familiar with the Reality Maelstrom, the idea of a planar rift "sucking" all there is nearby to it - and thus to it´s other side - can also fit in the idea of a black-hole. And while the effect may not be the desired (depending on your oponent/target and the destination plane) there´re possibilities taht can get you closer to a more belieavable black-hole:

The Far Realm: While not directly damaging in itself, it´s madening and unless one can gate back to the material, you can consider whatever is trown there to be lost.
The Negative Energy Plane: Death by life draining, not so much eficient unless you can target a section of it that have a greater negative energy trait.
Elemental Plane of Earth: If you can target a place and choose "not-an-air-pocket" (nor water, nor fire) and the target need to breath, you may not crush it to death but instant entombment inside stone and earth on the Earth plane, can be a good choice...
Planeshifter PrC (from Manual of the Planes): 20th level you get a plane where you can set any gravitational trait as well as any energy trait, get one, set center as down and assign a gravitational trait as great as you agree with your DM - energy traits are optional (fire, negative..).. Then research a specific spell to create a atraction effect to a gate to your plane (with Reverse Gravity?) or a create a planar rift to it...

Hope any of these ideas are of some use.... ;) take care...

Just toss a portable hole into bag of holding and be done with it. Instant black hole, according to the DMG description. Pretty expensive for a single-use effect though.

A black-hole arrow that uses this principle is described here.
