I am kinda new to spellcasters in D&D(never actually played as one, I ussually tried to make one and got confused and gave up). I was looking through Libris Mortis and got interested with some of the options in there and I have a couple of questions. These are mainly about the Blade of Pain and Fear(BPaF) spell since it seems to be quite a nifty sepll but it perplexes me so.

1. The Blade created by BPaF, is it like holding an actual sword after you cast it? Is the damage it does considered Magical for overcoming Damage Resistance? I am guessing it is just normal magic damage and not negative energy or anything like that.

2. Can you drop the BPaF and then pick it up again? Can it be disarmed? Can I carry it around like a regular weapon(like if I make it a persistant spell)?

3. If I am holding the BPaF, can I cast other spells?

4. Once it is cast, can I swing with it multiple times in a round, assuming I have a high enough BAB?

5. Can the BPaF be used to make ranged touch attacks if you Have the Divine Range ability (like from of the Heirophant prestige class)? And would the Zen Archery feat work with it in that case?

6. Do Ranged touch spells or Rays get penaties for shooting into melee if a friendly fellow is there like with a bow? If so, would Precise Shot negate that penalty?

Thanks for any help you can give.

I'll answer these to the best of my ability

1) The way you hold it is a matter of aesthetics, as it makes no mention of it in the spell. As such, you could hold it as a regular sword, or it could come out of your hand, a la Psylocke. As it is a spell, it is not subject to DR. The damage is untyped.

2) I would say no to all of these, though I'm not 100% sure.

3) Yes, so long as you have one hand free.

4) Yes

5) No, since the spell has a range of personal (or is it 0?), rather than touch. It creates an effect that you then use to make touch attacks. Its a subtle difference, but its there none the less.

6) Yes, and yes.

Hope that helps. I know spellcasters can be a bit confusing at first, but stick with it. They really let you flex your creativity and present you with far more options for any given situatioins than those without magic at their disposal.

Happy Gaming. :)

The tricky part for me is figuring out what combinations of magic things will work together. That and Arcane types seem pretty frail. So I am going to give the Divine dudes a try as they seem more sturdy.

Anyway, for the holding it part, Could it like be attached to the back of my hand thereby allowing me to hold a bow or a rod/wand in the hand? Or even be used for the somantic portion of a spell if my other hand is full?

I didn't realize that 0Ft. range and Touch were different enough for Divine Reach. So there goes my idea of having the Blade act as my ranged weapon. I guess I need to try and find a continuous melee(with Divine Reach) or ranged Touch spells that I could use to take the place of a (cross)bow.

Oh, and is it just me or is divine metamagic rediculous if can get ahold of enough Nightsticks?

Oh, and is it just me or is divine metamagic rediculous if can get ahold of enough Nightsticks? Its not just you. Divine Metamagic is one of the most broken things around. Nightsticks just make it worse.
