Hello.

Bless says it has a 50 foot range. However, the spell says the effect is centered on the caster. The two seem to conflict, any tips?

The Area for Bless says-'The caster and all allies within a 50 foot burst centered on the caster'. So the spell is both centered on the caster and reaches out to 50 feet. Look up burst area of effect on pg. 175 in the PH.

Hello.

Yes, thank you. However, Fireball is a burst spell with an area affect and its definately a ranged spell that doesn't "Center on the Caster".

Why does the Bless spell have a Range AND an area of effect if the Range has to be 0 (Centered on the Caster)?

its not that hard

you know how bless works, you know how fireball works, whats the problem? probably some confusing templating on the spell description.

Hmmm. Fireball is not a burst - it's a spread. However...

Bless is centred on the caster. The reason the range is listed as 50 feet is because the spell affects allies to a range of 50 feet.

The alternative would list range as 'personal', and then the area as '50 ft. burst centred on caster', which would probably make more sense... but the implication of the range 'personal' is that the spell has no effect on other beings around the caster, which would be misleading.

So the answer you are looking for is 'no, bless is not ranged'. It does have an area effect, however.

Range of the spell is how far spell's effect can reach. So 0ft range bless couldn't affect anybody except caster, even if area said 50ft radius.

If 5th level caster casts fireball centered 600ft away (max. Long range for 5th level caster), the blast would be cut in half - it cannot go beyond 600ft from caster.

That's why Bless and all similiar caster-centered spells do have non-zero range.
