Hiya there all, my DM is playing a slightly unusual campaign setting where spells have to make some sort of sense in context to the class your playing.

Anyway, my bard (which has a kind of heavy metal theme) has gained the blindness/deafness spell and my DM has rulled that the blindness portion of the spell does not fit. He has however allowed my to creat a spell more centered around deafening my foe.

So i was thinking would adding a "not only is the foe deafened but also shaken for 1d4 rounds" line to the spell in place of the blindness be ok? would it be over or under powered? Have you got any better/cooler ideas?

thanks very much in advance!

Check out Roar of the Waves from Stormwrack, deafens with no save and does some other effect as well if I remember right.

Sonic damage, bleeding ears. Or maybe los of equilbrium due to this:

The vestibular (balance) system is made up of five organs that are housed in the inner ear (labyrinth). These so-called vestibular organs are the three semicircular canals, the saccule, and the utricle. (The saccule and the utricle make up the vestibule.) The semicircular canals are responsible for the detection of rotation (angular acceleration). In contrast, the saccule and utricle are responsible for the detection of straight-line (linear) acceleration and gravity.

Nice idea, sadly Roar of the waves is a 3rd level spell. I was after something 2nd level (to replace blindness/deafness).

So I guess what I’m asking for, if I strip my question down, are ideas for what additions I can add to the spells deafness effect if I subtract the ability to inflict blindness (basically swapping out versatility for potency).

For example, how much sonic damage would be balanced or what kind of secondary condition would be acceptable?

As long as character is deaf must make a balance check DC 10 simply moving, 15 if in combat or rapid movement.

Perhaps remove the fort save or apply a penalty to the save. Or remove the SR component. Or some combination of both.

Maybe the spell would have been better off being named Dampen Senses, then you pick a sense and mess it up, blindness, deafness, lose your sense of taste, touch, smell. The taste one probably wouldn't have much combat impact but ruining smell could take away the scent ability from a creature and the loss of touch might make Dex-based values penalized or make it harder to attack.

Possibly a balance check or fall prone.

Quite a bit of the bard's magic is based on sensory manipulation, I guess I just don't see the point in removing the blindness side of the spell.
