Blindsight: Spells or Items? [Archive] - Wizards Community

First question; are there any spells or items in 3.5 which grant Blindsight? Savage species has a blindsight spell with a 30 ft. range, 1 minute/level duration, and it is level 2. But since Blindsight was split into Blindsense and Blindsight, I wonder if the spell should be a higher level now.

Once a spell is created for it, I want to design an item that grants blindsight. The item will be a blindfold which blinds the wearer, but grants blindsight to compensate. The blinding feature is both a benefit and a hindrence, so I don't think it should do too much to reduce the price of the item (possibly a 25% reduction).

there is an item in "arms and equipment guide" that grants 60 foot blindsight. I think it costs around 9,000GP.

i think it is a blindfold by the way.

Of course the "A&EG" is 3.0 anyway so you may not want it. I think it is about fair though.

Wow, only 9,000? I think that would be quite low. Blindsight negates all of the blindness penalties; the only penalty that still stands is that you cannot read, and I believe you can't see incorporeal creatures with blindsense (since they wouldn't give off vibrations, scent, or have physical matter to echolocate off of.

Level 2 x Caster Level 3 x 2,000 x 2 for being 1 min/level = 24,000 gp. 25% price reduction for blinding you would put it at 18,000 gp. Compared to other items. Goggles of Night cost 12,000 gp. 12,000/2 is 6,000. Darkvision could be a second level spell that lasts 1 hour per level, based on reverse engineering the item pricing guidelines. Blindsight is definately worth more than Darkvision.

Blindsight 5 ft radius is a second tier feat (requires blind-fighting). Second tier feats cost 25,000 gp (based on the greater bracers of archery, which are similar to weapon focus and weapon specialization). So for a 25% discount for the "cursed" affect, it would end up with a cost of about 19,000 gp. Compared to other equipment, this is about the cost of a luckstone, or an amulet of natural armor +3.

What level do you think the blindsight spell should be now under the new system?

Yes.
You can find the 3.5 version of the spell in the Player's Guide to Faerun.

True Seeing is 5th level, 120 ft. range. There are some things that True Seeing doesn't cover that Blindsight would cover, and there are some things that Blindsight wouldn't cover that True Seeing would.

That would be the Blindfold of true Darkness.

And The blindsight spell in PGtF is identical to the SS version. So don't worry about balance issues.

you know, that is weird. Goggles of night cost more? I think i will up the cost of that item to 20,000GP. It does not make sense.

Really now? Wow, that seems odd that they didn't make a blindsense spell. So based off the SS and PGtF versions, the item should cost:

2 (level) x 3 (caster level) x 2 (for the duration) x 2,000 x .75 (add hock 25% cost reduction for minor drawback) = 18,000 gp. The item has the following drawbacks: Cannot see incorporeal creatures, cannot read, and cannot see beyond 30 feet. A simple free action should alleviate the penalties, but would also disengage the benefits until another action was spent putting the blindfold back over your eyes.

All and all, I'm a little more comfortable with the item now.

Now for an ioun stone of darkness ...
