I'm trying to find a particular spell that is able to block detect thoughts, or possibility do what misdirection does (though misdirection itself says it doesn't fool detect thoughts). Thanks.

non-detection (forces the person using detect thoughts to make a caster level check to read your mind).

Mind Blank (complete immunity to detect thoughts)

ring of mind shielding (magic item in DMG, complete immunity to detect thoughts)

Simply haveing a high will save is adequet protection against detect thoguhts in most cases.

Aren't most Divination spells powerless to a thin sheet of lead as well? Hmm, I'll look it up and get back to you on this!

Edit: According to the srd Divination spells with the Scrying Descriptor can always be foiled by a variety of materials. Detect Thoughts doesn't have the Scrying descriptor, but it does say it can be foiled by similar means.

So I'd rule that you could protect yourself with a small cap covered by some hat and he'd be fine ;)
