I cannot seem to find an eratta on this item so please help me understand it or find the eratta. There has to be one!

Dungeon Master guide; page 249.
A wizard can fill the 1.000 pages of a boccob's blessed book with spells without paying the 25 gp per page material cost. This book is never found as randomly generated treassure with spells already inscribed in it.

Moderate transmutaion; CL 7th, Craft Wondrous Item, secret page; Price 12.000 gp; Weight 1lb.

Lets do the math here.

Players handbook; page 179.
Materials and Costs: Materials for writing the spell (bla bla bla) costs 100gp per page.

ex. A level 5 spell will occupy 5 pages and hence cost 500gp to scribe into your book.

So...
Boccob's blessed book will cost you 6000gp to craft if you have Craft wondrous items.
If you did not have that feat it would cost you 100.000gp to fill 1000 pages of spellbook.

I have several Questions:

1) Why does it say "A wizard can fill the 1.000 pages of a boccob's blessed book with spells without paying the 25 gp per page material cost.", when it says in Players handbook that the cost is 100gp.

2) What IS the correct price in materials to scribe any spell into a spellbook?(Not boccobs blessed book)

3) Can it be true that by making a boccobs blessed book you as a mage save 94.000 gold once the book is full? Or as a minimum, you only need to fill 60 pages in Boccobs blessed book to get your gold back in saved materials.

Thank you for reading this - It's becomming a problem in our group since we have two mages of which one does not have a Boccob's blessed book.

1. It is a typo. But the typo changes nothing. It still costs nothing to scribe a spell into Boccob's.

2. 100 gp per page.

3. It is true.

Yep .. a mage saves 94,000 by purchasing this book ...
on the other hand, a cleric saves 100,000 by not even needing the book in the first place!!! :P
(sorry .. couldn't help myself ...)

I see it as a way to help alleviate the "downside" of the mage ... (compared to cleric/druid, anyway) ...

I've been trying to think of ways of adding "spellbooks" to clerics/druids to help balance them ... but so far, no ideas .. :D (nothing that "makes sense" anyway ...)

Keep things in perspective, and they don't always look so ... er, "tasty" .. :tiphat:

That depends how heavy you consider the XP cost for making one, though that actually isn't that much.

Boccob's Blessed Books are GOOD.

You could just force them to play archivists... :D

Speaking of Archivists....

Since the Archivist's prayerbook thingie refers to the Arcane Magical Writings section... would it be reasonable to allow an Archivist to use a Boccob's Blessed Book for her prayerbook?

I'm away from my books, so I cannot review Heroes of Horror to verify the actual text...

They are very similar to Wizards, and I doubt that WoTC thought too in depth into providing them with the same options as Wizards...

I would certainly say yes, I doubt there are many DMs out there who wouldn't allow it, except core-only-DMs, who wouldn't be allowing Archivist to begin with. :D

It would be completely reasonable, but I believe RAW says no.

What about having unique Holy Symbols for each school/ sphere etc etc? They may not need them to cast a spell but maybe DO need them for when they pray for spells.

Hm, or a book of fables in which their deity used the spell to save/slaughter/ignore mortals.
The True Fables for gaining spells are expensive, blessed, (un)holy, and hard to come by?
