| Katana_Uno03-26-07, 01:33 AM | Does it cost 75GP per page when using Boccob's Blessed Book? I guess once you've filled 3/4 of the book you start to save some gold, if I understand it correctly. But it seems like a large investment if your cash strapped. If you have the Create Wondrous Items feat BBB only costs 6,250GP. But you still won't notice a return until you have over 250 pages of spells. Does anyone ever really use this book? What other benefits do/can you get from it? |

All 0's, so you start wasting 17 pages. I'd say you'd have at least 12, 1st level so 12 more. maybe 10 2nd= 20 pages. maybe 7 3rd=21 pages. Maybe 6 4th= 24 pages So far: 94 pages. Now this is a low estimate: but so far you've used 94 pages. There are a lot of 4th and higher spells that are good: it is a good investment if you make it yourself. You don't want to have to go to town to buy the scribing ink do you? |
| Bopple03-26-07, 11:53 AM | You have to pay 100gp per page for material cost, when you write a spell into a spellbook. Blessed Book removes that 100gp, totally. Neither cutting it down to 25gp, nor reducing it by 25gp. It totally removes the 100gp cost - zero for material cost. It's one of the most valuable items to a wizard. |
| Vegepygmy03-26-07, 04:27 PM | Does it cost 75GP per page when using Boccob's Blessed Book? No. As Bopple has already said, it costs nothing to add spells to a BBB. But you still won't notice a return until you have over 250 pages of spells.Don't forget that you can sell your old spellbook and thus recoup quite a bit of the cost of your BBB. A BBB does require a significant up-front investment, but it pays for itself in a relatively short period of time. |
| Katana_Uno03-26-07, 05:02 PM | As Bopple has already said, it costs nothing to add spells to a BBB. I guess BBB is really good. Especially if you don't have to pay the 100gp per page when adding new spells or copying spells. I am suprised that there aren't any other material costs when adding spells to a BBB. |
| Iver Gearsham03-26-07, 06:36 PM | Take two levels of Geometer from CA and all spells take one page each. |
| tarkin03-27-07, 12:11 PM | As a DM I would rule that Geometer ability does not work on a Blessed Book. I can't see a Loose DM allowing it. |
| Vegepygmy03-27-07, 12:35 PM | As a DM I would rule that Geometer ability does not work on a Blessed Book.As a DM, I don't see how you could justify such a ruling. |
| CantripN03-27-07, 12:58 PM | As a DM, I don't see how you could justify such a ruling. Seconded. |
| Iver Gearsham03-27-07, 02:55 PM | As a DM I would rule that Geometer ability does not work on a Blessed Book. I can't see a Loose DM allowing it. Why is it you never seem to appreciate and allow a character to use their hard won abilities? |
| tarkin03-27-07, 03:52 PM | I let people do lots of things. If you go: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=817143 you will see me telling someone that I like all of the feats he made (granted, I did question whether the 'flavor' was enough to make them fighter feats, but even then they were clearly well balanced, fair feats). I don't let people twist things to do something their abilities are not intended to do. If you pay for a +1 weapon, you get a +1 weapon, not a +10 weapon, cause of some typo in the book. Geometer powers was intended to reduce the price a specific amount of money and save a specific amount of paper/time/effotrt The Blessed book does the same thing, but uses a different method. Those that want to combine the two, now are doing what I call "exponential stacking". It is sort of like saying "To save time traveling, I buy an airplane, allowing me to travel far faster over far distances" and "To save time traveling, I buy a motorcycle which lets me travel inside a city far easier (by weaving between the cars)." You want to buy each one seperately, fine. I will even let you carry your motorcycle on the plane. But don't go try to "upgrade" your motorcylcle with a jet engine and claim it an now fly as fast as a jet plane, even while weaving through traffic. Things should stack, not interact exponentially. |
| jbsaff03-27-07, 03:57 PM | Can I buy a faster jet engine for my plane? -Or- Can I upgrade my motorcycle with a faster engine? |
| Iver Gearsham03-27-07, 05:38 PM | I let people do lots of things. SnipBoreing home made stuff not on topic. 1 I don't let people twist things to do something their abilities are not intended to do. Snip  6 Things should stack, not interact exponentially. 1 There is no "Twisting" The PRC says a Spell Writen by a 2 lvl Geometer Takes One page, where is the twist? And there is no typo no FAQ errata on the subject no Sage Advise nullifying it. B]2[/B] No, you obviously did not comprehend it. You do save money because you only need one page But it still takes 24 hours to copy. The space savings come from the sepecialized Shorthand magial language a SKILL Not from "mystical powers". 3 Hardly the BBB takes what is a full formed spell traped in a scroll sustained by EXP from a creator and uses it to make a nonmagical full representation of the spell as if you copied it without further expense. This takes 24 hours per spell. Now everyone knows if you want to use another mages spell book you need to make spellcraft checks for each spell. Why is that? Because every mage writes spells in their own way even if they got the same spell on scrolls written by the same Mage each would write it down in their books differently in their own style. A Geometer's Style just takes less space. 4 "exponential stacking". wow same cost in money (to buy a scroll) and time only better use of space, so Exponential so game breaking  . 5 More like, My computers full of files so I get a data compression program to make room, And I have a Memory Stick/PDA to take files around without hauling a laptop or full computer everywhere. 6 If you Knew what you where talking about instead of knee jerking anitmuchkin mode you might see it's not that bad. |
| GSonic703-27-07, 06:09 PM | A use of the book: In some offtime, I went to the university I had studied at. I got some apprentice wizards to assist me in the Spellcraft checks (so I pass no matter what instead of on a 3+). I filled up 750+ pages of spells, and no cost to me. Very useful, and it is also waterproof, if I remember correctly. |

Copying from anothers spell book from a library or not incurrs all the normal costs and time spent. |

| Halaku03-27-07, 06:38 PM | Id say let the geometer ability and BBB stack, its taken a good amount of the players resources to get it, so let them have it. Reminds me of a game with a cerebremancer/geometer that scribed all his spells on the facets of his enlarged psicrystal before canceling the effect, was a nifty trick. |
| vardock03-27-07, 07:04 PM | There is now way it would not stack. stacking is not even an issue. The book of geometer's book of geometry feature works by reducing the ammount of pages needed for a spell down to one. they do this by using a special system of writing down spells. it would not make any sense if ising a special book were to suddenly increase the space needed for this system when other wizards do not have to. |
| Katana_Uno04-01-07, 03:03 PM | What is the best way to protect BBB? A Wizard takes his book with him when travelling on adventures, so is it worthwhile to invest in protecting BBB from thieves or spells? If so what are good ways to protect it? |
| Vegepygmy04-02-07, 02:07 AM | A Wizard takes his book with him when travelling on adventures, so is it worthwhile to invest in protecting BBB from thieves or spells? That depends entirely on your DM. If he's the type to have enemies/thieves target your book, then of course it makes sense to invest in protection. If he's the type who never, ever bothers with such things, then it's a complete waste of your resources. If so what are good ways to protect it?My DM is the latter kind (unfortunately), so I just toss it in my Heward's handy haversack and forget about it. There are, of course, the usual warding spells. You might also invest in a decoy book, made to look like a real BBB and gimmicked with a Nystul's magic aura for good measure. |
| Iver Gearsham04-02-07, 03:43 AM | Enchant the BBB with Shrink Item and hide it nearly anywhere on or in your person. Tooth capsule from complete adventuer, or smugglers boots or one of the many hidden compartments in complet scoundrel. If you animate it IRC as per Animate Objects spell it could fly by flaping it's pages, add a little smarts and it can find it's own way home or too you. |
| StruckingFuggle04-02-07, 03:53 AM | Hide an Arcane Mark in it somehow, and summon it with an Instant Summons scroll if it gets stolen? |
| Iver Gearsham04-02-07, 04:04 AM | Hide an Arcane Mark in it somehow, and summon it with an Instant Summons scroll if it gets stolen? Instant summons asa matierial component uses a 1,000 gp saphire if you were a Geometer you could use a spellglyph in place of the saphire for the cost of 175 gp of inks. A realy cool version is the 1 lvl Dragon Mark from Dragon Magic it let's you scry on things you have marked. |
| CantripN04-02-07, 04:10 AM | Hide an Arcane Mark in it somehow, and summon it with an Instant Summons scroll if it gets stolen? That's boring, man. I'm partial to Plane Shift -> Discern Location -> Demand (Step through the Gate that will open in 6 seconds) -> Gate -> Crushing Hand -> Leave them in some hostile plane, say the Positive or the Far Realm. |

| vardock04-02-07, 03:25 PM | well in the complete arcane there is a special section about protecting your spellbook. you could give it energy resistance, make it waterproof, even ahve the very materals it is made of be tougher, such as having a strong cover or having the pages made of metal foil. |

(But yeah, Complete Arcane has some nice suggestions.) |
| Lixith04-02-07, 04:28 PM | Ok.... doesn't it cost 100GP per page to for inks and stuff? So a 6th level spell would be 600gp.... (not sure if that in the DMG or PH) The description for the BBB says you dont have to pay "the 25gp per page material cost" So what's the deal? where did the other 75gp go? or am i just missing something simple? |
| Vegepygmy04-02-07, 07:02 PM | So what's the deal? where did the other 75gp go? or am i just missing something simple? From the 3.5 FAQ: Boccob’s blessed book allows a wizard to fill its 1,000 pages with spells without paying the 25 gp per page material cost. The Player’s Handbook (page 179), however, says materials for writing the spell (special quills, inks, and other supplies) cost 100 gp per page. Which number is correct? Does it cost 25 gp or 100 gp per page to write a spell into a spellbook? Does Boccob’s blessed book merely subtract 25 gp from the 100 gp per page cost? Also, can a wizard write a spell from any source she could otherwise copy? For example, suppose a wizard finds an arcane scroll with a spell that’s on the wizard class list. Can the wizard copy that spell into a Boccob’s blessed book? Could the wizard do the same thing with a wizard spell from another wizard’s spellbook? Or is Boccob’s blessed book only intended as a cheap way to back up spells from one’s own spellbook? How long does it take to copy a spell into the book? Do you have to make any skill checks to copy the spell? The cost to write a spell into a spellbook is 100 gp per page (for materials) as noted in the Player’s Handbook. Note that with the arrival of D&D 3.5, this cost is half what it used to be, because spells now require only one page per spell level (minimum one page), rather than two pages per spell level. You can put any spell into a Boccob’s blessed book that you normally could put in your regular spellbook. When you do so, you don’t have to pay the 100 gp per page for materials. You still have to pay the cost for acquiring the spell (if any). For example you might buy a scroll to copy into the book, or you might borrow a spellbook from another wizard. When you obtain a scroll for the purposes of expanding your own spellbook, you pay the usual market price for the scroll, as noted in Chapter 7 of the Dungeon Master’s Guide. If you borrow someone else’s book, the usual price for each spell you copy is 50 gp per spell level. Also, you can research a new spell, see Chapter 2 in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. Writing a spell into a Boccob’s blessed book takes the same amount of time as writing it into a regular spellbook (24 hours), and the task requires the same Spellcraft check (DC 15 + spell level) you need to copy the spell into a regular spellbook (see page 179 in the Player’s Handbook). |
