Necklace/collar should be ok, but what else? Body slots listed in DMG are specifically for Humonoids, so some won't match up, and the total number may be different. Opinions on this would be welcome. For reference, here are the ones for humanoids: • One headband, hat, helmet, or phylactery on the head • One pair of eye lenses or goggles on or over the eyes • One amulet, brooch, medallion, necklace, periapt, or scarab around the neck • One vest, vestment, or shirt on the torso • One robe or suit of armor on the body (over a vest, vestment, or shirt) • One belt around the waist (over a robe or suit of armor) • One cloak, cape, or mantle around the shoulders (over a robe or suit of armor) • One pair of bracers or bracelets on the arms or wrists • One glove, pair of gloves, or pair of gauntlets on the hands • One ring on each hand (or two rings on one hand) • One pair of boots or shoes on the feet |

A headband or hat would not stay on unless you strapped it down. I don't think a headband would even work. A helm should be fine, having a strap. I don't think eyeglasses would stay on, no matter what. Although I did once put a pair of welding goggles on my dog, she didn't even seem to mind, and they stayed on. that was her halloween costume ;) Any of the neck stuff would be fine. I've seen dogs with shirts, so that would be doable, It would look really silly though. A suit of armor is definately possible by the rules - look at barding in the PHB. A robe on the other hand would probably interfere with movement. A belt could be put on, but I'm not sure of the usefullness. A cloak could be put on, but again it would interfere with movement getting tangled up in the legs. Bracers or bracelets would just fall off of a dog, some animals it would be possible where the ends of thier limbs are bigger like humans or horses. I don't think they would function however as it would be the equivilent of putting them on legs. Gauntlets or boots would not be possible on a wolf. You could put gauntlets only on something bipedal with limbs on the top. boots would impeed movement again on something like a wolf. On a horse you can use horseshoes in place of boots. I'm not sure rings would work on a wolf, I know in 2e they would be dissallowed because they had to go on hands, and wouldn't work on toes. I'd probably say no unless they had manipulative paws, like a rat or raccon. They would definately be out for hoofed animals. |

Robes, eh, those would have to be pretty similar to a shirt. Definitely not long and flowing, the poor beastie couldnt walk in it. Armor = barding, so thats good. Belts, no problem. You could also call it a girth-strap. Cloak/cape/mantle: a _short_ version should be doable. A mantle doesnt eveb have to dangle, it can be snug on the shoulders. Shoulder-harness, perhaps? Bracers are a bit iffy; if you assume that they wont just fall off, then they should be ok. The line between gauntlets and footwear is a little fuzzy with quadrupeds. As long as movement-affecting items required a set of 4 (ala magical horseshoes), they should be doable. Not boots, necessarily; socks/sandals perhaps. Gauntlets, i would disallow. Maybe i could be talked into it for clever manipulators, like otters or raccoons. Keep in mind that there is only a small difference between a finger-ring and an ear-ring. As long as an ear- (toe-, navel-, whatever-) ring filled a ring slot, i wouldnt have any problem allowing it. There is also the option of building custom slotless items. You could turn your wolf into a walking jewlery-display that way. If you can afford it, anyway. |

True, no wild animal would allow it. But we don't tend to give our magic items to wild animals. We might consider giving them to our animal companions, awakened animal party members, special mounts, and even trained pets. I don't think any of the body slots are mismatched for a quadruped. It is when you get away from "head - torso - arms/legs" creatures that the problems occur. Non-peds (Beholder), headless (jellies/slimes), and monopods (flail snail/purple worm, etc) would have some difficulties because many of the body parts just don't exist. |
