| Eyes of Vhaeraun02-25-04, 12:16 PM | Can you use the bonus spell slots from high Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma to accomodate Metamagic Spells, if you cannot cast that level of spells? For Example, a 5th level wizard can cast 3rd level spells, but has an intelligence score giving him bonus 4th and fifth level spell slots. Can he use these extra slots to prepare a Silent Spelled Lightning bolt or A Silent spelled displacement? I thought I read somewhere in sage advice that you could do that, but I wasnt sure. |
| Ryll02-25-04, 12:23 PM | To my knowledge, you cannot, as you do not actually gain these slots until you are high enough level to get the regular slots for that level. Otherwise there would be no real cost for using metamagic at those levels, as you would be using slots you could not use for something else anyway. |

| dantedarkstar02-25-04, 12:58 PM | There are 2 reasons for not being able to cast spells of level X: 1.You are too low level. "-" means you don't have that level of slots at all, no matter what bonus slots you could have. "0" means you don't have "normal" slots of that level, but do have bonus slots. Primary casters never have "0" thought. 2.You don't have enough Int. This is the situation where for example you are 3rd level wizard with Int 11. You can't cast 2nd level spells, but you DO have 2nd level slots (1 for the matter, eventually +1 specialist slot). You CAN prepare metamagicked spells in these slots (except Heighten Spell, because this meta changes actual spell level, and you can't cast 2nd level spells no matter why they are 2nd level.). |
