| Endarire12-10-06, 05:11 AM | My L11 wizard has 22 INT with items and 18 without. He used one L5 spell, prismatic ray- not spray- before losing his INT booster and thus he loses a L5 slot. He has baleful polymorph and draconic polymorph prepared. Which spell does he lose from losing the item? -EE |
| Yaeri12-10-06, 05:53 AM | If I get this correct, at the time your wizard loses his intelligence bonus, he has three level 5 spell slots of which one is empty. You can choose which spell slot he loses, even the empty one. I regard it just like a character who suddenly lacks the strength to carry all of his stuff. He can choose what he drops. |
| runestar12-10-06, 05:56 AM | Aren't you supposed to decide which spell goes into which slot at the time of preparing your spells. So, when your int gets decreased, you lose whichever spell was held in said bonus slot. So if prismatic ray was memorised in the bonus 5th lv slot, then good for you - you lucked out.:) |
| Yaeri12-10-06, 06:01 AM | I know you had to do that in the computer games (like baldur's gate). I've never done it in game. The only distinction I've made is for the bonus spell slot of a specialised wizard. I don't know the exact ruling, but it just seems the most logical. If the wizard suddenly lacks the intelligence to hang on to 3 level 5 spells, why would he use his remaining intelligence to hang on to an empty slot? (Mind you, this is my line of reasoning. The rules may very well support what Runestar says) |
| Nom12-10-06, 09:01 AM | I extrapolate from the FAQ ruling on turn undead and from the negative level rules which state you lose uncast spells first. That is, if you were previously able to cast 3 spells and now can only cast two then your cast spell counts as one of those two. I've not seen any ruling that says you must pick which spell occupies the bonus slot. |

He has baleful polymorph and draconic polymorph prepared. Which spell does he lose from losing the item? -EE This exact question is in the FAQ. He must lose a 6th and 5th slot. He has no 6th slots, so just a 5th. He must lose a spell (he can not choose a used slot.) You choose between the Baleful Polymorph and Draconic Polymorph. You can regain spell slots when you re-equip the helm. I usually require you to use 15 minutes to relearn the spells lost in this situation. Some say you regain them immediately, but is unclear. |
