| wipeoutxl2110-09-04, 04:37 PM | How do Bonus spells work in 3.5? I know you get a certain amount based on your wisdom score (for a cleric). Can these spells be used at any level spell? My players just reached lvl 3 and gained access to lvl 2 spells. They all want to be able to use their bonus spells and have like four lvl 2 spells right of the bat. Is this allowed? If someone could help me understand this it would be appreciated. P.S. it seems overed powered if you can use them at any lvl you can normally cast spells. I mean, you gain acess to lvl 9 spells and now you can cast 5 of them a day? WOW. Thanks again guys. |
| kSquared10-09-04, 04:48 PM | You add bonus spells to the base amount of spells you'd be entitled to at that level. A 3rd-level cleric gets 4 0-level spells, 2 1-level spells, and 1 2-level spell. They also get 1 domain slot for 1st and 2nd level (they have to use one of their domain spells in the domain slot). Thus, a 3rd-level cleric with no Wis bonus has 4/3/2 spells per day. To determine bonus spells for ability scores, check the Ability Modifier and Bonus Spells table located here (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/basics.html) in the SRD. For instance, a cleric with 16 Wis gets bonus spells of 0/1/1/1. A 3rd-level cleric with 16 Wis would have 4/3/2 + 0/1/1/1 = 4/4/3 spells per day. (He is entitled to a 3rd-level bonus slot from his 16 Wis, but he can't cast 3rd-level spells yet, so he doesn't get the slot.) edit: fixed! thanks Sphyre. |

| wipeoutxl2110-09-04, 05:19 PM | wow, dude, thanks for the info. I see the chart now. Thanks alot! |
| deanaw10-09-04, 09:49 PM | And one other thing - you never get 0th level bonus spells. |
| kSquared10-09-04, 10:07 PM | Actually, I'm pretty sure I saw a feat somewhere that did let you take 0-level bonus spells equal to (your spellcasting modifier - 1). I think it was in MoF, but not sure. |
| diaboli10-09-04, 10:27 PM | First off, there are currently no feats that allow you to get extra 0 level spells. There have been a number of posts with suggested methods of determining how to do it, but nothing official to date. Second, minor quip, but any spellcaster worth their salt is going to have bonus spells. Remember that in order to cast level X spell, the caster's ability score must be 10 + level of spell. So while theoretically a cleric could have a 10 for their wisdom and not gain any bonus spells, they would only be able to cast 0 level spells regardless of their cleric level. |

There have been a number of posts with suggested methods of determining how to do it, but nothing official to date. Nitpick to avoid misinformation: Page 41 of "Player's Guide to Faerun" has the regional feat Magical Training which gives three 0 Level spells or adds that number to your existing spell list. |
| Doug McCrae10-09-04, 11:52 PM | The feat Extra Slot, from Tome & Blood, could also be used to give you an extra 0th level spell slot. |
| Sphyre10-10-04, 03:39 AM | Everything kSquared said is correct and explained quite well. Only thing is he made a minor math mistake, so to avoid confusion I will point it out. A 3rd-level cleric with 16 Wis would have 4/3/2 + 0/1/1/1 = 5/4/3 spells per day. (He is entitled to a 3rd-level bonus slot from his 16 Wis, but he can't cast 3rd-level spells yet, so he doesn't get the slot.) The red portion is the corrected number. A 3rd-level cleric with 16 Wis would have 4/3/2 + 0/1/1/1 = 4/4/3 spells per day. (He is entitled to a 3rd-level bonus slot from his 16 Wis, but he can't cast 3rd-level spells yet, so he doesn't get the slot.) :tiphat: |
