 How do bonus spells work. I'm getting ready to complete an adventure and my Elf Ranger will become level 4 and I get to cast spells. The phb says i get to cast bonus spells but i can find anywhere in the book on how the bonus spells are achieved.

Thanx

Pg 8 of the PHB3.5 Table 1-1

You get bonus spells for a high ability score INT for wizards WIS for cleric and so on

bonus spells are based on wisdom, charisma or intelligence. for a ranger, i believe Wisdom is your key ability.

if your wisdom is high enough, according to the table referenced above, you get extra spell of each level, as you are able to cast those levels (not before).

My wisdom score is 17. I was thinking that i would get 3 lvl one spells but im not sure and i don't want to argue with my dm.

you would have one bonus spell of each level 1-3 So at Ranger level 4 you would have 0 + 1bonus spell. Did that make sense?

So i will have 0+1 first level spell + 1 second level spell+ 1 third level spell? I hope i understood right.

My Elf Ranger's ability scores are: :D

Str: 13
Dex:17
Con:15
Wis:17
Int:16
Cha:14

Had to add those i like them.

nice stats

So i will have 0+1 first level spellYes. + 1 second level spell+ 1 third level spell? No, you dont get the 2nd and 3rd level bonus spells until you can cast 2nd or 3rd level spells, so at level 8 you would get a bonus level 2 spell but no sooner, And at level 11 you would get your 3rd level bonus spell

Thank you so much but...

I still don't understand how my wisdom score has any affect on how many bonus spells i will get.

It's because a Ranger's spell-casting ability is Wisdom, just like a Cleric, Druid or Paladin.

Yes i understand that but i don't understand what u do to figure out how many spells a person would get. Is there a chart or a formula?

Thanx

As other's have already pointed out, the relevant table or "chart" is on pg. 8 of the PHB. Doesn't matter if it's 3.0 or 3.5, it's still page 8 of the PHB

On page 8 in the book all it has it the ability modifier chart and a small little paragraph about spells and a mentioning on bonus spells. I was wondering if there is a thing like the ac formula:

10+bla+bla+bla

I was just wondering

The formula you want is spell save DC and it is 10 + Spell level + spellcasting ability

On page 8 in the book all it has it the ability modifier chart....

That's the one. Now read across the top of that chart. To the left of modifier, you will see "Bonus Spells (by Spell Level)".

Combine that with the entry ABILITIES AND SPELLCASTERS, where it says "In addition to having a high ability score, a spellcaster must be of high enough class level to be able to cast spells of a given spell level."

Then read the example they give about Mialee.

But if you want another formula, try this:

You get a bonus spell of level x when the modifier to your spellcasting ability score is equal to spell level in question. You get one additional spell of level x for every additional +4 to your ability score modifier above x.

The only exception to that formula is for cantrips and orisons (level 0). Otherwise, x replaces levels 1-9 perfectly.
