Bonuses to (Greater) Dispel Magic checks? [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-10-07, 07:04 PM I'm looking for all the possible non-caster level bonuses to the checks for (Greater) Dispel Magic. The caster level maxes out at 10 (for Dispel Magic) or 20 (for Greater Dispel Magic), but there are some bonuses that can boost this check. The opposed number is a fixed function of caster level, so at higher levels it gets harder and harder to dispel ongoing spells.

The Clerical Inquisition domain grants a +4 unnamed bonus to dispel checks.

A Dispelling Cord (Magic Item Compendium) grants a +2 competence bonus, 5 times a day.

What other dispel bonuses are there?

12-10-07, 07:20 PM Elven spell lore is a +2 to dispel checks. I believe a luckstone also works on dispel checks.

Alas, Elven Spell Lore (from PH2) grants a +2 to the caster level check; the caster level still maxes out at +10 or +20. And a luckstone doesn't help, either:Stone of Good Luck (Luckstone)

This stone is typically a bit of rough polished agate or some similar mineral. Its possessor gains a +1 luck bonus on saving throws, ability checks, and skill checks. A Dispel Magic check is neither an ability check nor a skill check.

12-10-07, 07:49 PM Not sure that elven spell lore counts towards that cap, but if it does, makes for a really useless feat. I'm not sure I believe that is how it was intended to work.

You can qualify for Elven Spell Lore at level 9, and the caster level check for Greater Dispel Magic maxes out at 20. When you eventually reach caster level 20 you can retrain Elven Spell Lore for something else, using the rules in the same book.

12-11-07, 02:17 PM Check out Ring of Arcane Might from Tome of Blood and Magic.

Elven Spell lore should work. It says that it adds to the Caster Level Check; not Caster Level (at least that's what was in one of the previous posts.) I realize that it is a GM decision, but I usually allow any bonus to caster level to go beyond the 10 and 20 point caps for Dispels.

In any case, the most recent version of the Ring of Arcane Might is in Magic Item Compendium, on pages 121-122. It givesa +1 bonus to your arcane caster level for the purpose of spell penetration checks, caster level checks, and all level-based variables of any arcane spells you cast.You'll note that this doesn't help anything except the caster level, and is completely useless for a Cleric trying to improve her dispel checks.

Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil: +4 bonus to dispelling Abjurations (Complete Arcane)

12-11-07, 09:36 PM I believe that Spellcaster's Bane (a spell from Complete Mage) grants a +2 insight bonus to dispel checks.

Soultouched Spellcasting (Magic of Incarnum) grants +1 to dispel checks for each invested essentia.
