| americanjay09-16-04, 11:22 AM | I want a custom magic item: a goldpiece that -if triggered- returns to the previous owner within 24 hours. What would 1 boomerang goldpiece cost? |
| SlaineFargallows09-16-04, 11:32 AM | Those poor serving wenches. :nonono: I don't have my books handy, but I'm really curious. What devious plots are you intending to hatch? |
| americanjay09-16-04, 11:58 AM | Actually, I have been annoying one of my players (a thief) quite a lot. So I intend to reward him with one or more of these boomerang goldpieces. Actually: the books didn't help me. The DMG doesn't really have anything alike, except for maybe that boomerang ability when you throw a melee weapon. The SRD did not help either. So: anybody? |

Set the trigger for some day of time (or better, when the owner speaks the command word), and have the coin lock on to a small pouch owned by the thief. You could even include multiple coins in the creation without increasing the cost. Or hell, just make the pouch magical and state that any coins stored in it for more than 24 hours gains the ability (but loses it if they stay out of the pouch for more than 24 hours). The hefty price tag will insure that it's not exactly a common item somuchas a relic created by a gnome or worshipper of a god of trickery or something. If you still think it's too much, and want to add a little more fun to the whole thing, change it to a dimension door item (10,080gp). That way the thief will have to remain within 680 feet of the coin in order to get it back via the pouch's magic. Fantastic item for a god of mischief and trickery like Loki, though. :) |
| Krelios09-16-04, 12:10 PM | What is the closest spell to what you want? Then price it from there as a use-activated item (even though there's a time delay). The spell to use depends on several factors... 1) Is distance a concern? 2) Does it "travel" the distance or just appear with the owner? The cheap version: Mage Hand--limited to 25'. Spell Level (0.5) x Caster Level (1) x 2,000gp = 1,000gp The uber version: Greater Teleport--limited to same plane Spell Level (7) x Caster Level (13) x 2,000gp = 182,000gp Obviously the uber version costs FAR more than would be useful--and even the cheap one is fairly expensive, but much more reasonable. What would be even better is a coin pouch that could travel back to you with up to 5 pounds of coins in it (same cost, total of 250 coins = 5 pounds). Of course, that's still limited to 25' + 5'/2 CL so to make it usable over a longer distance it would cost more. The real drawback is that it only moves at 15' per round so it's going to be fairly noticeable. Razorblade Smile's suggestions are also good. It really depends on how much you want to spend--now you have some ideas. |
| Archtyrant Terevoth09-16-04, 01:00 PM | I wouldn't use the normal guideline for this item, since it's duplicating teleport, yes, but in such a small way. What this really is is a reusable gold peice. Limited by the fact that you're paying one coin at a time, and certainly not undetectable as eventually someone is going to find them missing and they also radiate magic. Now the real question is, what's the resuability worth? Offhand, a price of 500 or maybe even 100 gp sounds about right. That way you'd have to use it 500 or 100 times before you made up the cost of the coin. As requirements to create, I'd say teleport, locate creature and contingency as required spells. |
| crazysamaritan09-16-04, 01:09 PM | spre na skillenagh! Krelios has a good sense, I think. Probably should be the gold pouch, not the gold itself. |

| crazysamaritan09-16-04, 02:26 PM | Hooray for being chopped liver. :) That's what you get for trying to eat a dagger! Seriously, you dealt with times, but K mentioned you could make do with mage hand, not req. G.teleport. |
