Hi,
does anyone know how much a pair of Boots of Expeditious Retreat would cost if available?? Activated... say 10 non-consecutive minutes per day as a free action... (Or a total of 5 minutes switched on and of as a free action..)

The 3.0 version of Boots and Striding and Springing doubled your base move and gave you a +10 bonus on your Jump skill for 6000gp. I see they've been hit with the nerf bat in 3.5 though and now just give the equivalent of Longstrider with a +5 bonus to Jump skill for 5500gp. Personally I'd allow the 3.0 version to be used for the same cost.

3500 GP.

Level 1 x CL1 x2000 gp x1.5 (spell has 1 minute/level) (use activated), continuous

If you feel like adding in a jump bonus
+5 bonus= +2500 gp
+10 bonus = +10000 gp

Hence why they were nerfed for 3.5: In order to follow the creation rules.
So the 3.0 boots (double move and +10 jump) would be worth 13500 gp.

A couple of things...

First: 2,000 * 1.5 = 3,000, not 3,500.

Second: Duration of minutes/level is *2, not *1.5. By the book, they would be 4,000 gp.

They're WORTH considerably more than that, however, when you take into account the fact that +30' speed gives you a +12 bonus to jump checks.

In the campaign I run, and the one that a friend DM's, Boots of Expeditious Retreat cost 12,000 gp a pair, and they still get bought about as often as Heward's Handy Haversacks.

EDIT: That's 12,000 gp for use activated boots, so they're always on.

I reverse-engineered boots of movement from the 3.5 boots of striding and springing:

- Cost of the jump bonus = 2,500 gp
- If the movement bonus would be more expensive than the skill bonus, the skill would cost 2,500 x 1.5 = 3,750 gp, leaving 5,500-3,750 = 1,750 gp for the movement. Therefore, the movement bonus must be less expensive than the skill bonus.
- Because the movement bonus is cheaper than the skill bonus, the remaining 3,000 value of the boots is the movement cost multiplied by 1.5, so the movement cost 2,000 gp.
- Going back to the quadratic formula used for all magic items (constant x bonus^2) yields C x 10^2 = 2,000, or C = 20.

The pricing formula for movement enhancement is therfore 20 x bonus^2.

Look at normal movement enhancing spells, they never give a movement boost highre than +30'. Thus, three different types of magic boots can be introduced:
- Lesser boots of movement: +10' enhancement to land speed, 2,000 gp
- Boots of movement: +20' enhancement to land speed: 8,000 gp
- Greater boots of movement: +30' enhancement to land speed: 18,000 gp

Looking at the boots of speed, which grant more bonuses but for a shorter period of time, the price seems to be right...
