| BioEngine06-18-07, 01:17 PM | Bag of Endless Caltrops: This nondescript leather pouch creates an endless supply of caltrops. The owner can reach into the pouch and pull out handful after handful. It takes one standard action to fill a 5-foot square by hand. If the pouch is dumped out (As a partial action), it produces the equivalent of a 2-pound unit, but does not produce any more caltrops at all for 2 whole rounds. The caltrops produced are not magical and follow all the rules for normal caltrops (see Chapter 7 of the Player's Handbook). Caster Level: 9th; Prerequisites: Craft Wondrous Item, Leomund's secret chest; Market Price: 2,300 gp; Weight: -. ======================================== =========== Using the prerequisites for this item, would it be possible to create a Bottle of Endless Oil? I would presume that the only option when taking items from the bottle would be to "dump it out," which means each time the bottle is used it cannot be used again for 2 whole rounds. Assuming this were possible, and that the container is a 1 pint flask costing 1 silver piece and weighing 1 pound, how much should the Bottle of Endless Oil cost? |

Items are based on their power and usefullness. So, the first question we need to know is: what kind of oil are you expecting Each of the following will affect it's price. 1. Is is slippery? 2. Can it burn? 3. How long does one turn's worth burn? 4. How much damage does it do, to someone covered in it, while burning? ------------------- There is Alcehmist fire, and regular oil, among other things. Describe the oil you want, then we can price it. |

I apologize for my assumptions. I did not know that the items on your list were variables that could be modified for such an item. 1. Is it Slippery? - No 2. Can it burn? - Yes 3. How long does one turn's worth burn? - 2 rounds 4. How much damage does it do, to someone covered in it, while burning? - 1d6 fire damage |

| tarkin06-18-07, 02:02 PM | OK, so know the question is, how much is that worth. Unfortunately, there is some strong reason to give a high price. even assuming the oil goes bad within say 3 rounds (preventing sale, etc.), it is basically an oil version of the Quiver of Anariel. (http://ww2.wizards.com/Books/Wizards/?doc=fr_lonedrowstats). I could see pricing it at 7,000 gp. It's main use would probably be to someone attacking creatures with Regeneration that has Fire as a weakness. |
| BW022206-18-07, 06:47 PM | Folks, I don't see it as a particulary valuable item. 1. It takes a standard action to produce a 1sp, 1lbs liquid. Presumably with no container. In most cases, they can't get rich off this -- or must more than with the calthrop machine. 2. It can't be directly used as a weapon. One would need to carry flasks around with them, take one out (move), fill it (standard), fuse the flask (full round), and then use it (standard action). Realistically, at best, it allows folks to replentish oil for lamps, lanterns, and restock some flasks (if they carry the spares) between combats. They might go through 10gp worth of oil a year with what a typical adventurer uses. Perhaps starting fires, burning a ship down, etc. but they could do that just carrying 20 flasks of oil (2gp) in some waterskins. It is really only saving them weight in return for time. 3. Oil isn't that powerful. 2d6 over two rounds with a 10' ranged weapon, taking two rounds to use (or extra rounds to prepare) with only a 50% actually working. Even at low levels, it would hardly be affecting the combat. By the time someone can afford 2,500gp or so on such an item... its use is mighty limited. By 5th or so, few folks would waste the time to toss oil. They still need to carry flasks and rags. They still need to prepare, carry, and toss them in combat. 2,300gp seems fine. Hardly likely to break the game. I'd likely add some rule to prevent it's use as a money making machine -- as I would the calthrop bag -- but otherwise, it's pretty minor stuff. |
