In the campaign I'm running, my players have an evil spirit in their possession that seems to be trapped in an item right now. For reasons that would take too long to explain, they are avoiding destroying the spirit or releasing it. But it causes trouble for them. They want to lock it up in some way that they can keep it with them, but under control.

During the last game, they decided to look into purchasing an item that might hold such a thing and prevent it from doing any more harm.

How much would it cost to make an item that permenantly used the inverted Magic Circle against Evil? Is there an item out there I missed that funtions like this already?

Thanks

Decent idea. The players deserve role-play creativity xp!

I'd price it at about 5,000gp. High enough in price to keep it "special" and low enough to keep it accessible.

Decent enough pricing suggestion. However, I also smell a sidequest for materials/trust/whathaveyou.

With a magic circle against evil, inverted, it would cost a bit more than just 5,000 gp.
Magic Items I has a table of pricing for magical items. MCAE is a 3rd level spell requiring a 5th level caster, so it'd be 3 (spell level) x 5 (caster level) x 2000(for a continuous item) x 1.5 (duration of 10 minutes/level) = 45,000 for something with a continuous Magic Circle Against Evil, inverted - this could be a cage, box, carriage, etc. The benefit would be at least the spell wouldn't be ended so easily by the circle being broken.

To make the item cheaper, you could perhaps make this item usable only by a certain alignment or class (such as able to be opened only by a Cleric, or good aligned individuals) or usable against something of a similar nature for 30% off = 31,500 gp.

Odds are there is a cheaper way of going about this, however.

Thanks, yeah, I figured it would be out of their price range at the moment. That's good for me in the long run. The spirit is one of 7 that they need to collect and get rid of together. I want it to cause a little bit more trouble before they get the upperhand. But their idea was really good and I want to make sure I can facilitate their shopping around later on.

Thanks again.

it also leaves the option of the character getting hit with a random dispel magic, and things going very bad very quickly

Good point, about the Dispell Magic. What if it were like a bag of holding, however? So when the "Box" got dispelled, whatever was inside would still be trapped in some sort of "Magic Circle Against Evil" that was, nevertheless, still safely active within?
