Since my pixie can't really use cloaks because of her wings, I need something to boost her charisma in another body slot. Are there any other slots that won't increase the cost compared to cloaks of charisma?

Most of the enchanted mundane items can changed to some other mundane item witout much trouble. The easiest things being clothing. There is really no difference between a cloak of charisma, bracers/bracelets of charisma, belt of charisma, etc. They just take up different body slots. So there shouldnt be a problem with your bracelets and the price would likely be the same.

Circlets would be acceptable, and I'd allow bracelets of Charisma as well.

Robes would also work, theoretically, since it says they have many different effects.

(You can't have a Belt of Charisma without a price increase, though. The body slot affinities are all wrong, there :P )

Add 50% to cost of wonderous item to have non-typical version e.g. a vest of intellect +2 costs 6,000 gp vs. typical headband of intellect +2 which costs 4,000 gp. Check out the latest Rules of the Game series.

Sigh. Here's a list of affinities.

Headband, Helmet : Mental improvement, ranged attacks
Hat : Interaction
Phylacter : Morale, alignment
Eye lenses, Goggles : Vision
Cloak, Cape, Mantle : Transformation, protection
Amulet, Brooch, Medallion, Necklace, Periapt, Scarab : Protection, discernment
Robe : Multiple effects
Shirt : Physical improvement
Vest, Vestment : Class ability improvement
Bracers : Combat
Bracelets : Allies
Gloves : Quickness
Gauntlets : Destructive power
Belt : Physical improvement
Boots : Movement

Let's first see what's right out, as far as a Charisma boost goes... It isn't ranged attacks, morale, alignment, vision, protection, discernment, physical improvement, class ability improvement, combat, allies, quickness, destructive power, or movement.

That leaves mental improvement, interaction, and transformation... and Robe's "Multiple Effects" which I don't quite understand the meaning of :P

So I'd say you can make a Hat/Headband/Helmet of Charisma just as easily as a Cloak/Cape/Mantle of Charisma.

Anything else would require a price increase (unless you can convince me that "allies" can also mean that you make allies easier due to better Diplomacy checks with high Charisma, or something, but still, bracelets of Charisma aren't exactly what I'm thinking are most applicable).

I mean, a hat of Charisma isn't that far-fetched, considering there's a Circlet of Persuasion that grants +3 to all charisma-based skills already...

I will agree that a "headband" is best; coronettes, tiaras, diadems, all of these might be more or less appropriate...

I actually had made such an item specifically for a character; a druid would reward the 3 characters with a gift that suited the nature of each of the three representatives of nature (druidic tradition divided the world in 3 realms: earth, sea, and skies), and one of them was a headband with an eagle feather.

Who says your pixie can't wear a cloak?

In my opinion, it would just be a very thin cloak (like a cape) which drapes down between the wings. When I was thinking of what would make the most sense, I decided that a mask would be the best thing for charisma. It turns out that masks take up the same slot as goggles or glasses, but if I was a DM I would say that this is a legitimate affinity for the slot. Since all items that aren't in the book are basically minor house rules anyway (you can't get a hat of giant strength, because they don't exist, even though the DMG gives guidelines for pricing it), I would see no problem with this.

Sigh. Here's a list of affinities.
.

And the whole affinity thing is a suggestion that should be taken with a large grain of salt. The whole system is there just so you have a reason to take Forge Ring. After all a Cloak of Charisma doesnt even fit the affinity...

Except that sidebar isn't a Variant, it's a Behind the Curtains type of thing, showing you why the way things are the way they are.

Not all Magic Items follow the item pricing guidelines. Cloak of Charisma might be one of them - that's just the way it is since it's always been that way. However, I think it fits with Cloaks, since it could have to do with transformation - if it makes you look better, your Charisma would be enhanced to refelect that (mind you, looks aren't -everything-, but I think it's close enough a similarity to warrant an affinity).

You could even take a 'slotless item' for double the usual cost. Something like a bottle of magic perfume that you apply once per day for the Charisma boost. The bottle itself could produce a single application per day, and you can't dispense the contents into another container in an attempt to "stock up" - it's use it or lose it

Thanks for all the help. Unfortunately my pixie already has a headband of ferocity, so I don't think she could have a hat on too. I wanted something different than the cloak because it didn't seem possible to have a cloak on with wings, but then again magic items do adjust to the wearer, so one that didn't get in the way of her wings might work. I'll have to think about that.

And MystErikEry - I was thinking about diplomacy checks with the bracelets :)

I'm not sure that I like the body slot affinity system. I use it because it's part of the RAW, and I don't have enough of a problem with it to change it in my campaign....and I think the ramifications of changing to a non-slot-affinity system might be more far-reaching than I think. However, I'm not sure that I buy that it's actually more difficult, monetarily or magically, to make a Cloak of Charisma than Bracers of Charisma or Boots of Charisma. I think the items in the DMG are crafted the way they are (and the body slot affinities are assigned the way they are) simply because most people associate "being smarter" with the head (therefore headbands of intellect), or "being flashy" with clothing (therefore cloaks of charisma), or "being faster" with feet (therefore boots of speed), or.... You get the picture. Why would it be more difficult, from a magical perspective, to make a Belt of Haste (or a Cloak/Headband/etc. of Haste) than Boots of Speed?

As per the RAW, you can make an item* (or have an item made*) that grants a Charisma enhancement bonus and have it occupy a different slot than its "affinity" slot. The cost of doing so is 150% your original price. So to make Bracers of Charisma +6, you'd take a Cloak of Charisma +6 and multiply the cost by 150% [36,000gp x 1.5] and get 54,000gp. That's your base cost of the bracers.

*Subject to DM fiat, of course.
