A freind of mine found a way to use polymorph any object to create VAST amounts of money, literally turning lead into gold. Think about it. Lead and gold are both minerals, +5 factor, They are of the same class, i.e. metals, +2, and you are turning it into a lump of the same size, +2, THAT IS A TOTAL OF 9! Perminate change! You could use this on agrigate to diamond (gems) sage to saffron ( saffron is worth more than it's weight in gold). I cannot find anythign to stop you from making billions of gp this way, if you were carfull about it.

Here ya go, from the RSRD:

This spell cannot create material of great intrinsic value, such as copper, silver, gems, silk, gold, platinum, mithral, or adamantine. It also cannot reproduce the special properties of cold iron in order to overcome the damage reduction of certain creatures.

or the SRD:

This spell cannot create material of great intrinsic value.

OK, but 1 What do those abriviations mean and 2 does it stop you from tuning an object of little intrinsic value (say tin) into one of a highter BUT STILL LOW (say brass) intrisnic value? Define great here

I would rule that exactly enough of the new substance created to be equal in value to the old substance. In other words, suppose you have 20 cubic feet of tin and 1 cubic foot of tin is worth half as much as an equal volume of bronze.

If you tried to convert the tin into bronze with polymorph any object, you'll get 10 cubic feet of bronze (by my house ruling, anyway).

In the anime "Fullmetal Alchemist", which is largely about people who have the power to transmute elements, it's possible to turn lower elements into an equal mass of gold. It's just extremely illegal! This might be a good modification of the rule for certain campaigns. (For instance, Eberron.)

On the other hand, it might be best to reserve that for NPCs, as opponents for the PCs to hunt down and arrest.

Also Permanent is not = Instant.

Permanent stuff can be Dispelled with the right magic. And it detects as magical, so someone is likely to Dispell it.

There are lots of fair ways to make money using Magic spells of far lesser value then Polymorph.

My favorite such spells include:

1) Fabricate
2) Polymorph dogs into horses
3) Teleport people/stuff long distances
4) making buildings useing the various wall spells.
5) Removing Disease from warehouses of food.
