Wizard Breaking – An often misunderstood term of art, encompassing several interrelated fields that focus on disrupting a spell casters ability to cast spells. This spell knowledge and its effects, are not limited to Wizards, as any spell caster with spell slots, can be effected. Breaking works as a Sundering effect between a spell caster and spell slots. The attacking spell caster can use one of 4 spells (listed below) in this Breaking attempt. These spells, when cast in an attempt to Break a spell caster, lose all other functions. Breaking a Spell Caster: This is done via opposed caster level checks between the attacking caster and the defending caster. Attackers Caster Level Check: D20+ Spell Casting Attribute Bonus + Caster Level*+ Conditional Bonus Defender’s Caster Level Check: D20 + Spell Casting Attribute Bonus + Caster Level+ Conditional Bonus The Attackers Maximum Caster Level Bonus is limited by the spell used in the breaking.(See Spell Effect Table) The defending caster has no limits with respect to caster level. If the attacking caster check result is higher then the defending caster’s check, the defending caster is considered “broken” and is subject to having his spell slots broken. The number of slots ‘broken’ is based on the attackers spell. (See Spell Effect Table) Spell Effect Table 1. Dispel Magic - Maximum Attacker Caster level +10, Breaking Damage 1D6 Slots 2. Break Enchantment- Maximum Attacker Caster level +15 , Breaking Damage 2D6 Slots 3. Greater Dispel Magic -Maximum Attacker Caster level +20 levels, Breaking Damage 3D6 Slots 4. Mages Disjunction-Maximum Attacker Caster level +30, Breaking Damage 4D6 Slots Conditional Bonus (Apply as Applicable) 1. Arcane Caster attempting to Break a Divine Caster = -4 penalty 2. Divine Caster attempting to Break a Arcane Caster = -4 penalty 3. Abjuration Specialist Wizard = +2 Bonus 4. 20 or more ranks in Knowledge Arcana = +2 Bonus 5. Access to Magic Domain = +2 Bonus 6. Racial Favored Class is a spell casting class = +2 Bonus 7. 20 or more ranks in Knowledge Religion = +2 Bonus Breaking Spell Slots: If a spell caster is “broken” the spell caster loses access to a number of spell slots. The exact number of spell slots lost is dependent on the strength of the spell used to break the spell caster. A casters spell slots are broken in order of the highest level possible to the lowest level possible. Breaking effects spell slots, not individual spells prepared. However, a side effect of having a spell slot broken, results in the spell caster being unable to cast the spell associated with that spell slot. Healing Broken Spell Slots: A caster can generally recover spell slots that are broken at a recovery rate equal to the casters recovery rate of ability score damage. Broken spell slots are covered in order from lowest spell level broken to highest, the broken slots cannot be healed by any magical effect and recovery is dependent on natural healing rates. Special: The Completely Broken Caster: If a spell caster has all of his spell slots broken, the recovery rate is limited to 1 spell slot per week. |
