| Vaalingrade Ashland08-16-05, 01:01 PM | As I pointed out in my 'calculating' thread, I'm deeply disappointed in flight 3.5. And while I would never run a 3.5 game, I do have a campaign world that will probably need to be compatable with it. So that means its time to make flight anew in my own image to bring back the flying fun to DnD: Spells Winged Flight Transmutation Sor/Wiz 1, Drd 1 Components: V, S Casting Time:1 standard action Range: Touch Target: Creature touched Duration:1 hr./level Saving Throw: Fort negates (harmless) Spell Resistance:Yes (harmless) The target sprouts wings (apperance chosen by caster) and flies with a speed equal to thier base speed -20 (minimum 5) with a clumsy maneuverability. Norry's Casual Flight (Casual Flight) Transmutation Sor/Wiz 3, Travel 3 (replaces Fly) Components: V, S, F/DF Casting Time:1 standard action Range: Touch Target: Creature touched Duration:10 min./level Saving Throw: Fort negates (harmless) Spell Resistance:Yes (harmless) The subject can fly at a speed equal to thier base speed +10. It can ascend at half speed and descend at double speed, and its maneuverability is good. The target can charge and run, but it cannot carry aloft more weight than its maximum load, plus any armor it wears. Arcane Focus A wing feather from any bird or bat. Item Winged Cape This short cape, which comes in a variety of bird, bat and insect themes barely reaches the wearer's lower back. Speaking a command word, the wearer can cause the cape to transform into a set of wings of the wearer's choice that allows them to fly as per the Winged Flight spell. Weak transmutation; CL 1st; Craft Wondrous Item, winged flight; Price 1800 gp;Weight 2 lb. |
| Seeker9508-16-05, 01:52 PM | I like both of these. I would suggest that the 1st level version have a flat flight speed of 5'. Regardless of how fast you can normally walk or run, you flap your wings along at a clumsy, awkward, but airborne rate of 5. I think a semi-boost re-write of overland flight is not a bad idea either, and could complement winged flight. |
| Vaalingrade Ashland08-16-05, 02:02 PM | I toyed with a flat 10, but I figured that really big creatures are going to get more distance simply from glidepath physics. I'm thinking on a longer lasting WF called Soar, which is actually cast to enhance WF, but the mechanic I want eludes me atm. |
| Seeker9508-16-05, 02:06 PM | Physics be damned. I like a flat 10'. Even more than the flat 5'. It's magic, dammit. :D As for Soar... the mechanic could be long duration (a flat 12 or 24 hours?) with average manoueverability. Perhaps it cannot be cast indoors? Perhaps flight speed increases for each (duration) of flight, such that the longer the distance you must fly, the faster you end up moving in flight? |
| was_fired08-16-05, 02:27 PM | It should be their maxium load for casual flight not their heavy load + armor since their armor is already counted into their load. It doesn't make much sense for them to only be able to struggle at 5ft normally and then suddenly start flying without problems when flight normally only allows for medium loads unless I'm mistaken (which could be the case I don't have my books on me now). |
| Dragonsblood08-16-05, 03:52 PM | What do you have against 3.5 flight? Winged Cape This short cape, which comes in a variety of bird, bat and insect themes barely reaches the wearer's lower back. More for flavor than anything, but the wings should be appropriate to the cape theme - it shouldn't be wearer's choice. Just seems a bit odd to me to see a PC wearing a bat cape and sprout insect wings. |
| Vaalingrade Ashland08-16-05, 04:31 PM | What do you have against 3.5 flight? Fly - A minute per level? Pffht. Overland Flight - 5th level to fly a reasonable amount of time? It's called Teleport, use it. Wins og Flight - For some reason, 54,000 gold to fly because some designer rolled a dice to decide caster level apperently. More for flavor than anything, but the wings should be appropriate to the cape theme - it shouldn't be wearer's choice. Just seems a bit odd to me to see a PC wearing a bat cape and sprout insect wings. Noice. |
