I didn't see this classic item anywhere (in Unearthed Arcana it summoned d4 shadows) and wanted to recreate it with a bit more power and hideous spin. I just don't know how to gauge it's power or what would be required to invoke the following. The first ability is the same as in 1E unearthed arcana

1. Summon 1d4 shadows under control of the lantern holder for 1d8 rounds. To invoke this power the lantern owner must use human fat to power the lantern

2. summon a shadowy version of a slain foe (humanoid). It would be one of those shadowy templates of a specific creature. I imagine this is similar to some of the various Create Undead type spells. One in Unapproachable East (Create Dread Warrior) applies a template to a slain foe to create an undead. This costs XP and is a 6th level spell. The revived undead retains its former memories and is aware of its hideous existance and enslavement. Duration?

3. Summon a Shadow Demon under control of the lantern holder. Undetermine amount of time for control.

Maybe it's too much. What do you all think?

2. summon a shadowy version of a slain foe (humanoid). You might consider the Revenance spell from Complete Divine. 4th level? Lasts for 1 minute/CL. The target is actually alive for the duration, and can be healed. Probably not what you're looking for, but it's a lot more simple than stopping combat to apply a template to a slain foe.

I think it should be a minor artifact, if it isn't already (away from my books at the moment). As a minor artifact, don't worry about price. Make it do what you think it should. What you've suggested above isn't a bad start. I'd make the 1d4 shadows last for 1 min (the length of time the "charge" of human fat lasts).

yeah, seems to be way to much. I just thought it'd be cool for the Shadow Adept in my high level campaign. The template thing would be too much. Perhaps just a summoned Shadow in the form of the slain person without it's class levels would add the creepy evil element I'm looking for.
Thanks!
