Hi everyone,

Is there a spell out there that changes an undead back to the living? Like changing a zombie or vampire back into a living humanoid.

Let me know.

Thanks.

I would think that True Res would

or for that matter, I think a basic Resurrection spell would do...

Yeah, but you have to put the undead down first ;)

kill them then raise them as normal.

and you have to kill, kill them. so dust the vampire, destroy the liches phylactery, etc..

You don't have to kill them first. Read the section on the Undead type in the MM. The resurrection spells turn an undead back into the creature it was before undeath. Although the casting times for these spells makes this a little tough as a form of attack.

Hmm, could make an easy way out of tracking down a lich's phylactery. Just have the group grapple the thing and prevent it from casting, then res it.

You make it sound like an easy task to restrain a lich for 10 minutes, considering what countermeasures against getting into a grapple are likely to be available to a being of that power...

That could be true, but once you have a barbarian/fighter/monk grappling a lich inside an AMF, it's easy! :)

Edit: Annoying detail: You can't target the undead with ressurection while in an Antimagic Field... Better stick the Lich's leg out of that AMF.

Not to spoil the fun, but doesn't the effects on an AMF apply if a creature is partially within it?

Let's hope not. Then a colossal creature could cast AMF on himself, making him immune to magic, but he could still use magic weapons/shields/armor/wands/scrolls and wonderous items...

You could use wish to duplicate ressurection, thus reducing the casting time to 1 round.:)

you miss one SMALL part of res.

the "creature" in question needs to be dead. undead don't count. they are partly alive. you still have to dust the thing before you can bring it back to normal.

thats also assuming the undead WANTS to be brought back to life.

Ah, seems I was mistaken:
Should a creature be larger than the area enclosed by the barrier, any part of it that lies outside the barrier is unaffected by the field.I suppose a very big creature with a thin midsection might have that region protected from magic, though, in case, for some reason, a spell was targetted right there.

You don't have to destroy them first.

From the SRD under Undead Type:
"Not affected by raise dead and reincarnate spells or abilities. Resurrection and true resurrection can affect undead creatures. These spells turn undead creatures back into the living creatures they were before becoming undead."

I think the res spells have a time limit something like 1 day per cleric level. You can use genital repose to halt the time counter to expand the time limit. So if the undead has been dead for a VERY long time you probably wont be able to res it.

I don’t have the book with me so I could be mistaken.

but as per the spell, they would still have to want to be returned to the land of the living.

I was implying ressurections in general, not the res and true res spells..

This had me giggling like a schoolgirl.
