| suckerpunch04-22-04, 07:20 PM | here we go... i'm lookin for the most powerful magical item to be created for the cost of 10k or under....no holes barred....any spell, any skilll, any wizards legal book is to be used....i want ur best ideas. |
| Vanigo04-22-04, 08:12 PM | There's an inherent problem with your request: The price of magic items is directly related to how powerful they are. In theory, no 20,000 gp item is any more or less powerful than any other. In practice, of course, they won't be exactly the same power, but they should be. To get them as close as possible, you're supposed to tweak, or even completely ignore the pricing guidelines in the DMG. It doesn't matter that they say you can get an item that casts CLW unlimited times a day for 1,800 gp, because that would be absurdly overpowered. If the guidelines give you a price that seems too high or too low, you change it. Sometimes, as in the case of an unlimited CLW item, you just say "That's way too powerful, you can't make it at all for any price. Maybe if you were epic." To reiterate: The pricing guidelines are just guidelines, they are not the final word. Now, you could ask what items would be most useful, if not most powerful. However, to answer that, we'd need to know who you're making it for - is it for a wizard? A fighter? An avariel rogue? The answer would be very different. |

| suckerpunch04-22-04, 08:53 PM | well lets see here.... lets think wizard... something to do with crowd control lets think fighter....something to do with max dmg output lets think cleric...... something to do with keeping the party alive for as long as possibe. lets think rogue.... something to maximize sneak attack.... multiple items are ok...if it keeps the cost low. as for the sub classses....feel free to add at whim...ie druid, ranger, sorcerror...etc. |
| Edymnion04-22-04, 09:34 PM | An item that grants the highest Bluff or Diplomacy bonus you can get for the money. Easy as that. Although its typically considered bad form on these boards to say "Build me X!" and not even trying to do some of the work yourself. If you want help, we'll be happy to help, but we aren't here to do your work for you. What kind of item do you want? Who's it going to be used by? Class, stats, skills, etc? You gotta put some effort into this if you want us to do the same :) |
| Steelcrystal04-23-04, 12:12 AM | I don't think the individual presenting this question probably wants to use the item himself, sounds more like a theoretical challenge just to see what we can come up with using the rules as given. |
| teclis04-23-04, 02:00 AM | wand of cure light wounds at will usable by anyone is 3,600 gold. healing the entire party to full after every fight in a matter of minutes is definitly useful. |
| Seeker9504-23-04, 08:09 AM | Stone of Curing [broken] The possessor of the stone can use cure light wounds at will, as per the spell, curing 1d8+1 points of damage to the target. Not like there's that many good necklaces to wear, and it cuts the price down to something affordable at very low levels ;) |

For spells with durations, those formulas are ok. For instantaneous spells, I prefer to tack on the number of uses per day formula. I've noticed that some people only use that formula to achieve some cost savings as a number of uses per day less than 5 can reduce the cost. Once they hit 5 uses per day, some people just stop there and call it "continuous", but if you wanted 6, 7, 8, ...... or more uses per day, then it would cost more. Figure the cost of Cure Light Wounds 86,400 times per day and I'd say the Stone of Curing would be better priced. :D (but even then, it'd be only once per round... and Epic!!) (edit: 34,560,000gp slotted or 69,120,000 unslotted sounds about right :) ) |

Most powerful item available for under 10k... ok, lets look at the possibilities... I want to look at an item that provides a permanent use of a 1st level spell with a duration that normally doesn't go beyond the next round... (True Strike, if you didn't figure that out just from that limited info) According to the DMG, the base cost on an item that does a continuous spell is Caster Level x Spell Level x 2000 gp x 4 (because of the normal duration measured in rounds). First level spell, first level caster, 8000 gp base cost. I'll make it Lenses (wondrous item). I'll also make it require a skill to use (reduce the base cost by 10%). When I make these Lenses of True Striking, they will only work for someone using a longbow or shortbow (or composite versions). And there we have an uber-item for under 10k. And as a DM, I would not allow it, at least not this easily. But you might be able to push it in your own game. Just remember, though, whatever the players have, the bad-guys can have too. |

Do you really think you're the first person to come up with that? That item (which has been posted by hundereds of people), along with the amulet of cure light wounds, are the definitive examples of why you [b]don't[/i] just follow the formulas blindly! |

Which is why I stated that as a DM I would not allow such an item. However, as a DM, I did introduce an NPC with an item based on this concept. The unique lenses gave their wearer a +10 insight bonus to attacks made with a shortbow or composite shortbow, and negated the miss chance for concealment, but it required a full round action to aim and gain that bonus. The +10 made it a bit weaker than casting the True Strike spell, and the weapon limitation kept it from being overpowering. In essence, the lenses were a lesser form of True Strike with a full round casting time useable at will. I also doubled the cost, just because it still seemed a little powerful for the formulaic price. |
| Boondoggle04-24-04, 04:42 AM | Hmm, how many curses can I squeeze onto an item to make it dirt cheap...? The net of snaring seems like a decent item for 10k gp. |
