Burning Hands and Blast of Fire, The In Between. [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-30-06, 01:58 PM K, in a campaign that I'm playing, my DM and I are a bit confused on how you can create an inbetween version of burning hands and blast of fire.

For those that don't know or don't want to look it up-
Burning hands = 15 foot cone of 5D4 fire damage (1D4/level), 1st level
Blast of Fire = 60 foot cone of 10D6 fire damage (1d6/level), 4th level

Now, I'm curious as to what kind of damage and range a 2nd level and 3rd level would do compared to the 1st and 4th level stated above.

Casting time, components, target, duration, and everything else is easy to do, but I just need to know what a 2nd level and 3rd level version of burning hands would probably do.

Any thoughts?

12-30-06, 03:02 PM Bear in mind that Blast of Fire is Conjuration, while Burning Hands is Evocation. Thus, Blast of Fire ignores SR.

Anyhow:
2nd - 30 foot Cone, 1d6/2 levels (Max 5d6).
3rd - 60 foot cone, 1d6/level, (Max 10d6).

Blast of Fire only got to be 4th level because it ignores SR.

I hate to point this out, but calling someone a twit and then responding with "I will not enter a flame war with you" isn't the most mature way to deal with something. Nor will it help anyone in any way. YOU threw an insult, deliberately and without any reason to do so. Blurting out "Oh, but I don't want a flame war!" doesn't change the fact of it at all.

12-31-06, 02:47 AM CantripN was pointing out the reason that Blast of Flame was fourth level, Fireball does the same thing, sorta, damage wise anyway, in a burst, and is 3rd level.

it seems pretty simple though:
2nd: 30', d4 damage
3rd: 45', d6 damage

.
never mind that you're comparing spells of different schools when there's 3rd level fireball(evocation, like burning hands) which does 10d6(1d6/level) in a 20' radius burst at long range(400'+40'/level)...
