| Boo04-11-04, 02:57 AM | What do you think would be the appropriate level of a druid spell to allow the natural attacks of an animal by-pass the damage reduction of demons or devils (say 2 different spells if necessary). Since it would be granting essentially two abilities to the attacks (Good and either Cold Iron/Silver) would putting it in the same level as Greater Magic Fang be appropriate (similar duration, range etc)? Or Perhaps put it a level higher since it shouldnt be too easy to by-pass any demon's damage reduction? Also perhaps have it scale up with level , e.g. Silver/Cold Iron, then Silver/Cold Iron or Good at , then Silver/Cold Iron and Good? Any input would be appreciated |

| Boo04-11-04, 07:33 PM | Unfortunately Align Weapon specifically says it wont work on Natural weapons. Hence me wanting to create a spell that does both align it to good and make it silver/cold iron like in one spell. Silvered Claws already exists in the book of exalted deeds and its a 1st level spell. Also to balance putting the spell at 3rd level, the spell would only be effective vs. Demons/Devils not other creatures that require Silver/Cold Iron/Good to by-pass the damage reduction. |
| Seeker9504-12-04, 08:52 AM | Well, for natural weapons, you don't need align weapon if the natural weapon possessor is of good alignment. If it is an animal... well, I think it makes sense that align weapon does not work on natural weapons. Either the natural attacker is good or it isn't. I forgot about the BoED spell! As for a spell that combines both aligning and material elements... I would probably make this a sanctified 3rd level spell, with the sacrifice being 1d3 points of Wisdom as the caster diverts some will power into the physical capacity to combat the evil. The loss would last for the duration of the spell. |
| Boo04-12-04, 10:02 PM | You sure about the rule about just needing a good alignment? It doesnt seem right to me, especially considering the sanctify natural attack feat (BoED) and the VoP ability in the same book that allows any weapon/natural attack of yours to penetrate good damage reduction. Why would there be these abilities if just being good (which is necessary for these abilities) by passed the damage reduction? |
| flyingmoose04-13-04, 01:48 AM | Your alignment has nothing to do with what DR you bypass unless you have your alignment as a subtype. Otherwise why the [heck] would a monk need Ki Strike (lawful)? Just up the spell level by 1 or 2 and call it align fang, stating it only works on natural weapons (not manufactured ones). |
| [GSV] Kirstar04-13-04, 03:54 AM | isnt their an oil that you can rub onto weapons / claws etc ? |
| Kethka04-13-04, 09:59 AM | There is no spell at all to make weapons act as cold iron, and this is done for a reason. If you read the sidebar on special materials in the DMG it points out how there is a (silversheen, I think it's called?) spell which makes weapons act as silvered, but there is no similar cold ironsheen spell, because the unique attribute of cold iron is its abnormal resistance to magic if tempered correctly. Obviously, having a *magic spell* which makes a weapon (or claw) act as cold iron completely undermines this and makes no sense. Also, it costs an additional 2000 gp to place magical enchantments on a cold iron weapon (because of the difficulty to enchant it), so why would anyone ever pay that if they can just make their iron longsword cold iron with a spell? Sorry for the rant -- I didnt realize I'd say that much :embarrass |

Works for monks hands (since they are treated as a weapon and a natural attack) but doesnt work on claws of pets - unless they want to take a level of monk :P that's it awaken them and have them take a level of monk and you'll be all set. EDIT: it's in the DMG page 266 |
| Boo04-13-04, 10:35 PM | I realized that there is a reason why there is no magic to make something cold iron which is why I wanted a spell to simply by-pass the damage reduction of demons. Even with no magical ability to make cold Iron, I figure there should be a way to magically by-pass their damage reduction, but would require a new/specialized spell. |
