Rewrite of the Explosive Metamagic Feat

The fireball spell in AD&D times, was a spell subject to great deal of ‘interpretation’, as to the pressure wave associated with the spell. Thus, in subsequent editions, the fireball spell was changed “the explosion creates almost no pressure”.

Now we have the new feat – Explosive (from CA). IMO, the write up the feat, is very poor and will resort to all kinds of problems. (such as large creatures are more likely to be moved the small creatures as they tend to have lesser reflex save values) My proposed fix, is to incorporate a bull rush effect.

A. Strength of the Effect: The amount of damaged rolled is the Bullrush effect value. Include in this value any spell damage modifiers. (For example: Warmage Edge). The Bullrush effect value is halved upon a successful reflex save. [Note: For purposes of the Explosive Metamagic feat’s Bullrush value, any ability that reduces damage inflicted is not used unless that ability renders the subject immune to the underlying spell. Thus energy resistance and evasion are ineffective, but spell resistance and energy immunity are effective. ]

Any creature in the area effect is allowed to make an opposed Bullrush roll, subject to all the standard modifiers, including size & stability. Compare the two rolls and allocate movement as indicated.

B. Direction of Movement: When the spell is cast, the caster designates the blast origin point. From that point outward, any effected creatures are moved in a straight line away from that point. Origin points for line effects run down the center of the line, forcing the creature to the left or right of the line effect.

C. Damage from Movement: For each ten feet a creature is moved, the creature takes 1D6 damage. If creature strikes a solid object, she stops and takes 1D6 damage plus damage from any prior movement. Any creatures in the area effect are knocked prone unless they make a tumble check DC 15+ the number of feet moved. Successfully making this tumble checks reduces the blast damage by 1D6. Unattended objects in the area effect are subject 50% more damage due to the blast wave.

Is this workable?
