So I created a prestige class "A" that offers +1 Caster Level, under the column "Spells Per Day", every other level. Simple right? I figured if I'm a 6th level cleric and 2nd level "A", I would have a caster level of 7.

However, my players argue that caster level = level of class capable of casting spells. How say you?

+1 caster level in a PrC provides a level of "a class capable of casting spells".

Caster level 7 (assuming only +1 caster level between 1st and 2nd level)

You sir, are correct.

Unless otherwise stated, caster level only goes up if the +1 spells per day also goes up. Some classes improve caster level during the off levels, but those specifically state that they do.

Further some classes like Ranger or Paldin don't have a caster level to a certin point and then have a caster level equal to 1/2 there level.

High Octane or anyone else for that matter. A player of mine would like to ask the following:

"Could you give an example of a class or prestige class where such a mechanic is applied. Or point me in a direction where this mechanic is mentioned?"

Complete Arcane: Green Star Adept. It specifically mentions that the caster level improves on the off levels. Other classes do not.

Although it isn't every level you can see something very similaur with the Eldrich Knight from the DMG or SRD.

Green Star Adept is also found on the wizards web site as part of the CA preview.

It's a great mechanic for partial casters, that I wish more PrC's adopted. It lets you maintain competetive with spell resistance while being slightly less spell focused.
