I thought of this spell because my druid is currently under the sea in a sunken city, and because we didn't have enough gnomish scuba gear, my wardog animal companion had to be left on the ship.

Call Animal Companion

Druid 4? 5? 6? /Ranger 4?
Conjuration (Calling an/or Teleportation?)

Components: V, S, DF.
Casting Time: 10 minutes.
Duration: Instantaneous.
Range: 100 miles per level.
Target: 1 animal companion.
Saving Throw: none (harmless).
Spell Resistance: Yes.

This spell teleports the caster's animal companion to a square adjacent to the caster. The animal companion must be on the same plane of existance as the caster and within 100 miles of the caster per caster level.

OK, does this seem like a good spell? Is it druidy enough? Are the spell levels appropriate? Is it not too powerful? It's supposed to be a spell to transport the animal companion to the druid or ranger. It would be most useful if the caster had to travel through some kind of dangerous terrain, or by a method impossible for the animal companion to use.

Teleport is 5th level -- with the other variations sitting at 7th level -- but has a very different function/purpose.
Summon Monster/Nature's Ally varies in level with the creature being summoned, but is much closer in concept..

Your spell objective is limited to a single unique target. A paladin accomplished the same thing when summoning his mount, and he cannot do this until 5th level.

Make it a 5th level spell, available to any caster class that has a "companion" -- druids, sorcerers, wizards. For a ranger to make use of this spell, it would have to be incorporated in a magic item, since they don't have 5th level spells.

I almost suggested making it 4th level to allow rangers access, but that detracts from the relatively unique nature of the Paladin and his mount. Allowing a class to duplicate that ability at a lower level just doesn't seem fair.

But since the paladin can also dismiss his mount, that makes his ability somewhat more "powerful".

So, final judgment:

Call Animal Companion
Drd 4, Rgr 4, Sor/Wiz 4
Conjuration (Calling)
Components: V, S, F.
Casting Time: 10 minutes.
Duration: Instantaneous.
Range: 100 miles per level.
Target: 1 animal companion/familiar.
Saving Throw: none (harmless).
Spell Resistance: Yes.

This spell teleports the caster's animal companion or familiar to a square adjacent to the caster. The animal companion or familiar must be on the same plane of existance as the caster and within 100 miles of the caster per caster level.

The Paladin ability is available at 5th level. A 4th level Druid, Cleric, and Wizard spell is available at 7th level (8th for sorcerer). A 4th level ranger spell isn't available until 15th I think.

Good point. I was mixin' and matchin my class levels and character levels. But since I already rationalized the 4th level spell anyway, keep it there so the ranger can enjoy!

I think 4th level is apt. I mean, clerics get Lesser Planar Ally at 4th, and that's considerably more powerful, isn't it?
