The bolt of lightning flashes down in a vertical stroke at whatever target point you choose within the spell’s range (measured from your position at the time). Any creature in the target square or in the path of the bolt is affected. You need not call a bolt of lightning immediately; other actions, even spellcasting, can be performed. However, each round after the first you may use a standard action (concentrating on the spell) to call a bolt. You may call a total number of bolts equal to your caster level (maximum 10 bolts). If you are outdoors and in a stormy area—a rain shower, clouds and wind, hot and cloudy conditions, or even a tornado (including a whirlwind formed by a djinni or an air elemental of at least Large size)—each bolt deals 3d10 points of electricity damage instead of 3d6. This spell functions indoors or underground but not underwater This spell is one of my favorite spells. But recently one of my players used Call Lighting believing he could call multiple bolts in one standard action. To which I told him, “No, it states one bolt per concentration on the spell as a standard action, up to a maximum over the duration of 1 bolt per caster level Max 10 bolts. Well we grumbled and sank back in his chair. Yet it has left me to wonder was he correct am I reading the spell wrong? |
| chitzk0i06-07-06, 05:24 PM | It does say "call a bolt". |
| Luske06-07-06, 05:51 PM | Think of it a 30d10 spell at lvl 10  anyways clearly state "call a bolt" |
| SALDAR06-07-06, 06:00 PM | He may be thinking of Chain Lightning, which does allow multiple bolts at once. |
| Victor_Phoenix06-07-06, 06:51 PM | What he said about it is, that you can call multiple bolts, but they can't hit the same target. Which of course is no where in the spell description. But I do think that would be an interesting spell. Thanks everyone for the clarification. |
| prozacman06-08-06, 02:12 AM | is it just me, or does call lightning not specify the type of action needed to call it? this has been bugging me for a while.. is there errata? or something im missing? |
| tarkin06-08-06, 10:50 AM | Just you. You missed this line, in the middle of the description: However, each round after the first you may use a standard action (concentrating on the spell) to call a bolt. |
| Bukowski06-08-06, 11:07 AM | Can anyone give me a breakdown of how a call lightning should operate with the metamagic feat Born of the Three Thunders? |
| tarkin06-08-06, 11:27 AM | All damage is 50% sonic, 50% electrical. In addition you get the thunder effects, when the spell CONCLUDES. So you get nothing more until you use your last bolt/the spell expires. Only when you send the LAST bolt (or the spell expires), you get a huge thunderclap. Then anyone that took damage from any of the bolts you used, must save or be stunned for one round. |
| lukelightning06-08-06, 11:35 AM | I tried to call lightning but all I got was lightning's voicemail. |
