| Necro711110-24-04, 02:06 AM | Hello this may seem like a stupid question you guys have answered before but let me ask you this how does call lighting work here is the spell so you dont have too look it up Call Lightning Evocation [Electricity] Level: Drd 3 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 round Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level) Effect: One or more 30-ft.-long vertical lines of lightning Duration: 1 min./level Saving Throw: Reflex half Spell Resistance: Yes Immediately upon completion of the spell, and once per round thereafter, you may call down a 5-foot-wide, 30-foot-long, vertical bolt of lightning that deals 3d6 points of electricity damage. The bolt of lightning flashes down in a vertical stroke at whatever target point you choose within the spell's range (measured from your position at the time). Any creature in the target square or in the path of the bolt is affected. You need not call a bolt of lightning immediately; other actions, even spellcasting, can be performed. However, each round after the first you may use a standard action (concentrating on the spell) to call a bolt. You may call a total number of bolts equal to your caster level (maximum 10 bolts). If you are outdoors and in a stormy area-a rain shower, clouds and wind, hot and cloudy conditions, or even a tornado (including a whirlwind formed by a djinni or an air elemental of at least Large size)-each bolt deals 3d10 points of electricity damage instead of 3d6. This spell functions indoors or underground but not underwater. ok the questions i have are this 1.immediatly upon completion of the spell and once per round thereafter (ok i get after you complete the spell but the 1 per round thereafter are the thereafter bolts free actions i.e. part of the spell) 2.it says that you use a standered action to call a bolt then says you can call a number of bolts equal to your caster lv(can you call more than one bolt a round) 3.the effect line in spell desription stats one or more 30-ft long vertical lines or lighting(i mean scorching ray says one or more as well so does that mean more bolts) 4. the reason behind the question is then spell lasts 1 min per lv not 1 min per lv or until discharged so the need to place a max on 10 bolts wasnt needed it should have been 1 bolt a round. thank you for your time i hope i didnt sound dumb |

You must spend a standard action to call a bolt, which you may do one time each turn during the duration, until you've used up all the bolts you get. That means even if you have more than one standard action during your turn (perhaps if you're playing with action points, or using 3.0 haste), you can still only call one bolt during that turn. Look at it this way -- when you cast the spell, you get X shots. You can only shoot once per turn, as a standard action, and you have to use them all within X minutes or lose what you didn't fire. 3.the effect line in spell desription stats one or more 30-ft long vertical lines or lighting(i mean scorching ray says one or more as well so does that mean more bolts) One or more *total*. You still only get one bolt per turn. The text doesn't disagree with the effect line, because the effect line doesn't describe a time factor at all. 4. the reason behind the question is then spell lasts 1 min per lv not 1 min per lv or until discharged so the need to place a max on 10 bolts wasnt needed it should have been 1 bolt a round. I have no idea what you just said. The text clearly says you get one bolt per caster level, maximum 10, and you have to use them all within a minute per level. The presence or absence of "or until discharged" is totally irrelevant. |

Typicaly, spellcaster will get more then one bolt. All rules lawyer-like this should read one 30-ft long vertical line of lighting Per round, with an additional 30-ft long vertical line of lighting posible per round..... 4. the reason behind the question is then spell lasts 1 min per lv not 1 min per lv or until discharged so the need to place a max on 10 bolts wasnt needed it should have been 1 bolt a round. It always get a bit confusing trying to wrod spell like this and not leave any loopholes for the people that like to use them. You could put 'Until Discharged' in the duration, though you'd have to put 'Until all bolts are discharged' to be accurate. You don't want a duration of one round a bolt. The whole idea behind this spell is you can do other things while the spell is running. A 12th level caster has two 'free' rounds to do things and not lose bolts. Though any caster can give up a bolt or two if needed. BT |
