Does this spell effect 1 5ft. square or do you effect 4 5ft squares because it is a line spell.

The text says you have to target a square, so you can't hit intersections. In theory, you could still hit four creatures that way (two riders and a flying and non-flying mount, one below the other).

It is a vertical line, meaning it affects up and down, not a horizontal line like lightning bolt. Most combats don't involve the third dimension, it is normally only important against flying creatures or underwater combat. It is basically a 5ft. cylinder.

The effect it creates is described as a "line," but they don't mean a "line" as in an Area: Line spell (though it operates in most respects like one).

So no, you can't place a called lightning stroke at a grid intersection and affect all four 5-foot squares around that intersection (as you could if it were an Area: Line spell). You have to pick a "target square" instead.

It makes sense, Call Lightning is already good enough.

The fact that it affects a whole five foot square doesnt make much sense. The average lightning bolt is about 1 inch around...

Yea, and it takes out trees that are 10' radius just like call lightning takes out Large sized creatures.

1'' around and arcs to anything within 2 1/2' radius...

Wait, so you can't shape it?

Shape it? If a spell doesn't have an (S) in parentheses like that, it isn't shape-able. There are very few spells, core or otherwise that are actually shape-able (unless you take specific metamagic feats).

Don't apply reality to D&D. Otherwise call lightening would be nullified by tall metal objects. Additionally, lightening bolt would be really stupid if it, too, was only 1-2 inches in diameter. Just imagine that the casters are summoning really big lightening bolts, I guess.

The average lightning bolt can't be forced to hit a specific point on the ground with a perfectly vertical column of "electricity damage" when you tell it to, either.

They do if you ask them nicely enough. I zap people all the time.
