Can the break enchanment spell break a ghost's possession of a body through its malevolence special ability?

Can a protection from evil spell break the ghost's possession, or can it only prevent possession in the first place?

Thanks!

I'd say no. Malevolence is based on magic jar, which is not affected by break enchantment (it is not an enchantment, not a transmutation, and not a curse).

Magic jar (Malevolence) doesn't control the mind of the host. It replaces it entirely. Hence it's not [Mind-Affecting]. Protection from alignment would prevent the possession, but would have no effect on an already possessed host as the spell doesn't grant ongoing contol of the subject's mind.
