| Bak03-26-05, 04:55 AM | Typically, Unicorn can be found only by female. On the Summon Nature’s Ally IV, we have unicorn on the list. Can a male NG lv 7 druid summon it? If he can, then can he request the unicorn to heal his wounded allies or fight against Evil without using any Diplomacy or Wild Empathy check? Bak |
| otomik03-26-05, 05:25 AM | no, female virgins only, you'll notice that same list has many different things you can summon but only if you qualify, just as a cleric of a good deity can't summon fiendish monsters. |
| Seeker9503-26-05, 09:38 AM | I disagree with otomoik on this. The restrictions on summon nature's ally and summon monster are detailed in the summon spell -- alignment and environment (aquatic/land/air) are the only restrictions identified. The restriction on unicorns is found in the unicorn monster manual entry, independent of the spell. If it is on the list and neither alignment nor environment restrictions are triggered, you can summon from the list. However, I would have no objection to otomik's ruling as a houserule, since it fits flavor-wise. |
| Grayequus03-26-05, 04:47 PM | Solomon commanding demons and rebellious afrit <essentially the same thing through a different theosophic lens> by virtue of divinely-granted authority as what amounts to slave labor to build his Great Temple with impossible speed, if I'm remembering properly. So it makes as much mythically-resonant sense for a lawful or good caster to compel the infernal rebels to serve the higher good :) |
| mrpopstar03-26-05, 05:10 PM | BAK: I agree with SEEKER95. There is nothing rules-wise that restricts a male druid from summoning a unicorn. I also agree that OTOMIK does have a valid point in terms of flavor. Try summoning one in play and see how your DM reacts. :) GRAYEQUUS: You are correct! Darn D&D game designers and all their unfounded restrictions! |
| Lawrence03-26-05, 07:47 PM | unless you use something similar to a gate and all, you're not neccessarily risking a real unicorn. It is 'a' unicorn, but if it dies, it's just remade again. It's more like borrowing one, making a clone, and sending the clone out or whatnot. And the issue of unicorns is that the males tend to get gored or something. It's not against reason to believe the unicorn won't help you (as in the case of a druid, and evil one can't summon a unicorn because it would become a good spell methinks) but if you try to pet it, it might 'try' to gore you. play with it as you will. |
| sabrewolf03-26-05, 09:44 PM | Personaly i´d allow it.. with some minor flavour changes.. Come think of it, usualy on tales by comparison or outright description, the unicorn is pictured like a noble stallion of white with the famous horn.. i e.. male.. and the rider a virgin woman.. :angelhide ..hey, i can see you smiling, you.. foul minded.. :P So unless unicorns sprout out of nothing or just exist, no reproducing like other living beings, then i´d alow a male to summon a female unicorn.. yet, agreeing with others here, i wouldn´t advise getting too close to pet it ´less you are ´pure´, good-hearted or at least pass some few difficult diplomacy checks.. :D |
| lion9303-26-05, 10:00 PM | I think it's an entirely different thing for a druid to summon a unicorn than a 'normal person' to try to ride it. A male druid, by virtue of his understanding of nature and his oaths to protect it, should be able to summon a Unicorn to attack his foes or to heal a party member. That same druid, however, should understand the Unicorn's purity issues and not try to make it go against its nature and serve as a steed to anyone not pure, virginal and female. A druid who crossed that line would be defying nature rather than protecting it. Druids are different than fighting men, wizards, peasants or nobles. Their gender is less important than their holiness. |
| mrpopstar03-27-05, 02:56 AM | One of my favorite movies of all time, "The Last Unicorn", told the tale of a unicorn and her male companion. He never tried to mount her and she never offered to carry him, but there was a scene when a now middle-aged woman encountered the unicorn and her companion and was horribly dismayed that the unicorn had never come to her to be her steed when she was young and pure. The woman pet and nuzzled the unicorn, something that the male wasn't invited/permitted to do. He actually apologized to the unicorn once when he had lost his balance and touched her lightly to catch himself. Just food for thought. LION93:Druids are different than fighting men, wizards, peasants or nobles. Their gender is less important than their holiness.I like that sentiment. :) |
| scwolf03-27-05, 03:07 AM | http://archive.gamespy.com/comics/nodwick/fantatoon/fantatoon15.jpg Though, really, this is only tangently related to this thread. After all, that's not a druid, not with all that metal armor, anyway. Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I agree with the You can summon, but "no touchie" guideline. |
| RaspK FOG03-27-05, 05:42 AM | So fas as we know, a druid using the Thousand Faces ability really changes form... that means that at level 13th plus, no druid ever faces this problem (unless he/she is not pure). |
| Seeker9503-27-05, 08:45 AM | at level 13th plus, no druid ever faces this problem (unless he/she is not pure).By 13th level, how many of them are? |
| otomik03-27-05, 09:20 AM | If you're playing in forgotten realms there is an entire God out there (Lurue) that would probably like to protect the unicorn's image and reputation and wouldn't allow unsuitable summonings. A unicorn isn't just any magical beast, it's gooder than good, purer than pure. If you allow guys to summon it, it takes away a lot of the "no man has ever seen a unicorn" mystique. |
| Seeker9503-27-05, 04:13 PM | If you're playing in forgotten realmsThis prerequisite explains it all. :D |
| mrpopstar03-27-05, 04:54 PM | I believe that males with pure hearts and pure intentions have the ability to see a unicorn. In that ultimately cheesy yet lovable epic "Legend" with Tom Cruise(his first film I think), the character "Jack" could see the unicorns he just wasn't permitted to approach them. The elves/sylvan creatures in the film(male and female) were given permission to tread near them, yet even they were quite cautious and reserved. Pure men can see them, or how else would they know of them? In the aformentioned film "The Last Unicorn," the twisted witch who captured the unicorn magically gave her a false horn in front of her real one so that all of the "fools who come to the wandering caravan could see her for what she truly is(male and female)." There was another scene where two hunters were speaking and one mentioned that he "had not seen a unicorn in these woods for quite some time, though there is one that remains, since the snow never falls here and I fear she is the last." There's also another scene where a dirty old man sees her and mistakes her for a horse. |
| mrpopstar03-27-05, 04:56 PM | I've just realized that the cartoon "The Last Unicorn" is my definitive source on all things unicorn. Hehe. :D |
| smrtgmp03-28-05, 03:01 AM | By 13th level, how many of them are?Not many. I mean really, by 3rd level, how many of them are? |
