Like could you empower a spell twice to make it do double damage and be 4 levels higher?

In 3.5 there is a variant rule that allow you to take a metamagic feat twice in order to apply it twice.

So if you took Empower Twice, you could cast a fireball that did 10d6 *2 as a 3+2+2 = 7th level spell.

I have never seen people play using this rule, but I have heard of it.
