The subject says it all.

Can a PC wear 2 magic rings and 2 magic earrings at the same time without their magic being affected?

no

2 ring slots. 3 with the Hand of Glory (but that then becomes a neck slot to ring slot conversion, really). An earing seems more like a headband slot.

You could theoretically create a custom magic earring that didn't count as taking up an item slot (double cost).

Magic Items On The Body
Many magic items need to be donned by a character who wants to employ them or benefit from their abilities. It’s possible for a creature with a humanoid-shaped body to wear as many as twelve magic items at the same time. However, each of those items must be worn on (or over) a particular part of the body.

A humanoid-shaped body can be decked out in magic gear consisting of one item from each of the following groups, keyed to which place on the body the item is worn.

One headband, hat, helmet, or phylactery on the head
One pair of eye lenses or goggles on or over the eyes
One amulet, brooch, medallion, necklace, periapt, or scarab around the neck
One vest, vestment, or shirt on the torso
One robe or suit of armor on the body (over a vest, vestment, or shirt)
One belt around the waist (over a robe or suit of armor)
One cloak, cape, or mantle around the shoulders (over a robe or suit of armor)
One pair of bracers or bracelets on the arms or wrists
One glove, pair of gloves, or pair of gauntlets on the hands
One ring on each hand (or two rings on one hand)
One pair of boots or shoes on the feet
Of course, a character may carry or possess as many items of the same type as he wishes. However, additional items beyond those listed above have no effect.

Some items can be worn or carried without taking up space on a character’s body. The description of an item indicates when an item has this property.

There you go.

I'm not aware of any magic earrings per RAW, though I'm with Zapogee: earrings sound more like they'd take up a hat or headband slot, not a ring slot. If that's the case, then a PC could only wear one earring (or one pair, if the item came as a pair of earrings), but it wouldn't interfere with any magic rings the character was wearing. It would, however, interfere with magic hats or headbands.

Yes. You can wear two magic rings and two magic earrings, without their magic being affected.

Two rings is perfectly within the core RAW.

Two earrings would be magic items with an uncustomary space limitation, although I recommend treating them as a slotless item. Basically, you would have to increase the price of the magic items by 50% if you allowed them as uncustomary slots, and double the price if you treated them as slotless.

I favor the latter.

One glove, pair of gloves, or pair of gauntlets on the hands.

One headband, hat, helmet, or phylactery on the head

So, I belive it would take a helm slot. However, to gain the benifit of the earings you must wear both.

I think Seeker is correct. I would make them slotless. Then you could wear 10 of them if you wanted to.

i hate to bring old topics up... but i ran across this and had to say something.

me and my friends have discussed this several times, and we have ended up with the same answer each time.

if it says ring in the name or has referance to a ring, it is still a ring. because by saying you can have 10 ear rings, this means 5 in each ear think of it this way, you have a grand total of 8 fingers and 2 thumbs, but on a hand you can only have 2 magical rings. there for, just because you have other places to put it, doesn't mean that you can add more on.

and if you do allow ear rings, why not add in toe rings? eyebrow rings? tongue ring? lip rings? nose rings? nipple rings, or even a prince albert?

(if you don't know what a prince albert is i suggest you DON'T look it up!!!)

now the last 2 things are a little silly to suggest, but i know a few players that would glady wear wemon's underwear outside of their full plate mail if it ment that they would get some form of bonus. :looloo:

so as a closing note, it would be over doing it to alow more then 2 rings alowed on a body, because things would get too out of hand... and it would make a game extreamly wierd and kinda odd for searching someone after you killed them for their magical items, let alone equipting the prince albert ring after you found it on some dead guy EWWWWW!!!!

As there is no official "Earing" item slot, such items would count as "no space limitation" and cost double the normal gold. Alternatively, if one earing counted as a headband, it would be an "uncustomary space limitation" and cost 1.5g.

That said, one could potentially create a houserule stating that a character can wear a pair of earings, however it's basically the same as wearing 4 rings, which gives a signifigant power increase to the PCs but that's all up to your DM (I'm personally playing in a campaign with 4 rings allowed per character, and let me tell you it can lead some some unsually powerful characters)

Again, wearing rings is NOT about being able to fit them on your body, it's about how the magic of the rings interacts with your body. Hell even creatures with 4 arms need to take the "extra item space" feat to wear 4 rings and have them take effect (under normal rules, see Savage Species)

The bottom line is, the rules don't say what items can or can't be made slotless, so a double-cost slotless ring crafted as an earring (or whatever) is a perfectly safe bet.

Also keep in mind that you can simply add another property to an existing item. If you want a ring of invisibility but don't want to give up your ring of protection +2, feel free to make it a ring of invisibility and protection +2. Which is the very example given in DMG.

Slotless items do not take up one of the STANDARD slots as provided by Lord Ian Stark in this thread. Period. If you decide it's an earring, a king albert or just a trinket you carry around in your beltpouch, I consider it good roleplaying to have that stated so more power to you.

if it says ring in the name or has referance to a ring, it is still a ring.If that works in your game, fine.
But by the rules, a "magic ring" goes on the hand, and you can have two of them.
Anything else is a wondrous item, and is priced accordingly. No matter where you put it.

Ehhh... this is the first time I noticed the "Behind the Curtain" body slot chart only includes wondrous items. :embarrass

Even so, the side note in the "Estimating Magic Item Gold Piece Values" chart refers to the complete list of body slots, and not just wondrous items. Thus, by the book you could indeed craft a ring (at double cost) and dangle it from your ear, it simply wouldn't count as an earring per se (i.e. it might as well be kept in your pocket and it'd function just the same).

There is a nipple piercing M-I in the BoVD. If someone wants to create a magical earring that takes up no normal item slots, I don't think it would be an unreasonable request for the right price.

Thus, by the book you could indeed craft a ring (at double cost) and dangle it from your ear, it simply wouldn't count as an earring per se (i.e. it might as well be kept in your pocket and it'd function just the same).

It probably still needs to be worn/wielded in a particular way to be used (i.e., an earring in your ear), even if it doesn't take up a normal item slot. Other "slotless" items like ioun stones still need to be used in a particular way.

A ring is not an earring anymore than ball is a football. Just because they both have ring/ball in their names, that doesnt make them the same thing. They arent used in the same way. They dont even look alike. Seeker is correct although I am going to have to say that it is an uncostumary body slot (thereby disallowing multiple pairs of earings being worn) You could wear 10 rings if you wanted as long as 8 of them were no body slot items (and cost double because of it) And in no universe should wearing an earring interfere with wearing a ring.

btw, it was the "Nipple Clamp of Exquisite Pain" you were thinking of, not quite a piercing but still kind of thing...
-----------------------------------------
anyway...

the reason why i'm saying that there should only be 2 magical rings regardless of if it goes on your finger or peirced into your skin is because for 2 simple reasons...

1) there is a reason why makers of D&D allowed you to have only 2 rings (not talking about people with more hands :pbbbtt: ) and thats to keep charactors from getting over powered by limiting their abilities...

2) and also, if you were using an ear ring, what properties would you be allowing it? hmmm lets see oh heres a good bet ANYTHING ON THE FLIPPING RING SECTION!!!! there for its just adding in more rings that go on your fingers, only putting them in a differant place and calling them something else.

A ring is not an earring anymore than ball is a football. Just because they both have ring/ball in their names, that doesnt make them the same thing.

your right, i see exactly what you mean, but in this case it doesn't exactly apply because you see, your using this "ball" in every aspect you would a football, there for, if your kicking it like a football, throwing it like a football, passing it like a football THEN IT MUST BE A FOOTBALL!!!!

then again i guess i can't fully win here, because any DM can just full of say "Well i don't care what you have to say, because i run my game like this, so THERE!!!"

hail to the glory of D&D where logical thoughts are about as common as highelf barbarians...

Rings are priced as rings. No price increase required. Limit = 2
Earrings, tongue rings, nipple rings, etc are NOT rings. They cost twice as much. Limit = whatever you can afford.hail to the glory of D&D where logical thoughts are about as common as highelf barbarians...Oh, the irony...

Personally my interpretation is that you can take your bog standard ring of do X thing and make it slotless costing double what it normally would. An example of this would be an incredibly wealthy character like Jarlaxle who is festooned with random magical items. They are all clearly magical as they have the ability to jingle or be silent as he desires. Do they all take up slots or are they simply items crafted to ignor ethis restriction? My gut (and the rest of me too, incidentally) says the latter.

i dont see why an earing or maching pair of ear rings couldnt take up a head slot. ear rings instead of a helm. i would imagen having both earings and a helm on at the same time would be uncomfortable anyway.

and by saying they could have any amount of other peircings means that a king could kill everyone because he could just spend all the kingdoms wealth on magical peircings for himself, making him boost to become demi god like.
Atirakis

06-07-06, 11:50 PM
I disagree any good DM wouldnt allow multiple piercings to work like that. You can have 1 pair of earings and 2 rings, if you take the extra item slot feat then you can wear 2 more rings on your toes if your DM is so inclined but that would be pretty much the max of anything any sane DM would allow in his/her world. If the king emptied his treasuries in order to get magical nipple rings he would have a very large army expecting payment breathing down his neck very shortly.

No space limitation(4) Multiply entire cost by 2 Ioun stone

(4) An item that does not take up one of the spaces on a body costs double.Whoops. Looks like all the kings in your campaign world killed everyone, boosting themselves to demigod status.

you know technically you could get 4 magic rings to work... left hand, right hand, hand of glory.....

plus peircings... and walk around a college campus some day and you will see there are hundreds of spots for magic items in, on, or through the human body...
prozacman

06-08-06, 01:56 AM
we have a houserule that rings dont have to be worn on the fingers.. they still take the ring slot, whevever you wear them.. but you could wear them on fingers, toes, ears, or any other body part you wanted. But you only get 2, period.

No mechanical difference, but fits in with more peoples flavor ideas.

06-08-06, 05:20 AM
I personally would rule earings to be a very specializated slot, I would allow a pair of magical earings always that it is related to sonic effects.

I would allow by example earrings of listen +5, earrings of comprehend languages, earrings of telepathy and such.

For unrelated effects I would double the cost instead the normal 1,5 price.

PD: Yeah I would also allow a tongue piercing of tongues spell, but will use the "face" slot.
Seeker95

and by saying they could have any amount of other peircings means that a king could kill everyone because he could just spend all the kingdoms wealth on magical peircings for himself, making him boost to become demi god like.So you object to unslotted items in general, not just piercings.

'Cause for the same price, that same king can have as many magic stones of XYZ as his treasury can afford.

no counting with the weird ruling that limits the active number of magical items posible to 12 and that most adventurers have more cash that most kings.

The last bolded statement is what allows additional worn items. (Ioun stones, Stone of Good Luck)
"Many magic items" that are worn are under a slot restriction, and a character can only use twelve of them, each keyed to a body position. "Some Items" are not. No contradiction.

Meh, rule zero dude. It's all guidelines. Personally I just like the idea of a high level character trying to remember if it was the third or the fifth earring on his left ear that triggers feather fall when he's jsut fallen off a cliff.
