Can it be done?

Not with the base spell Awaken. It only works on plants or animals.

If you are talking about a spell called Awaken Object, that should work.

But I don't think Awaken Object exists. In general the spell Animate Object does what you want.

Savage Species features Awaken Construct, which will work on any humanoid-shaped construct.

Much better, however, is Minor Servitor from the same book. It both permanently animates a small object and grants it Intelligence.

Well, what I want to animate & awaken is a 3 lb lump of dream matter that the party found in a famous module that I will not name (because I do not want to give anything away - no matter how inconsequential).

The stuff is definitely magical and non-humanoid shaped.

Ideas?

I would definitely allow a Wish spell to Awaken a permanently animated object of any size.

The benefit is relatively small, and it is basically doing a spell of no more than 7th level.

Wish should probably work but I was hoping to find a more standard way of doing this.

Is there any way to bind a soul to something?

Maybe a combo of Craft Wondrous Item and the Magic Jar spell. Dunno.

But I would allow Awaken Object (or Construct, I do not remember exactly how it is worded) to work regardless of shape. But I doubt that to be RAW...
