| SurfingMonkey07-25-06, 11:06 AM | The game I play in has an extremely tight time scale (DM`s calendar). And I never have time to Craft Woundrous items. Is there a way to pause time and Craft items? If so at what caster level? |
| Derren S.07-25-06, 11:10 AM | No. There is a feat to reduce the time you need by 25% but nothing else. The only way would be to find a plane where time flows faster then normal and to craft there, but such a plane is highly abuseable so your DM might not allow it. |
| tarkin07-25-06, 12:34 PM | Such a plane already exists. It is called the Astral Plane. |
| runestar07-25-06, 12:44 PM | It's called wish. :P |
| Black_Puffin07-25-06, 03:44 PM | I ran into a similar predicament in a campaign a few months back. My bard had been wanting to craft wonderous items for a long time, but the DM's schedule wouldn't allow it (only so long until the multiverse was destroyed and all that). Then a light shone in the darkness, all of the PCs wanted to craft items, the longest of which would take 2 weeks. He allowed it. |
| shruggar07-25-06, 03:46 PM | The Astral Plane is "Timeless", meaning time appears to flow normally but effects dependent on time (like thirst, hunger, aging, disease, and poison) do not progress until one leaves the plane (at which point it occurs retroactively. three weeks worth of poison damage hurts ;) ) In my mind this would make crafting a wonderous item Impossible on the astral plane. (*unsupported opinion) "Timeless" is different from "Flowing Time", where time flows at a different rate. There are no examples of Flowing Time in the basic planes. It was recently argued that the 9th level Genesis spell would allow one to create a plane with Flowing Time, but a sane DM would probably disallow that. The only feat I know of to make items faster is the Epic "Efficient Item Creation" feat, which reduces crafting time for a specific class of items by 90% |
| Magicianguy13107-25-06, 04:31 PM | 1.) Change the rules so days dont matter (your players would like it but it makes the game overpowered) 2.) Create a demi-plane just for crafting items. It would make it so you can enter the plane, and make your item, and exit it in the exact same time you entered. They could have portals in big city and you have to pay a fee to enter it. 3.) Create a dedicated wright (it an homoculus from Ebberon) |
| Iver Gearsham07-25-06, 10:12 PM | Stronghold Builder's Guide book page 75 Chamber of Speed it is a Hast effect permanently in a room it lets you get things done in half the time. Next is to check out the Perilous Portals articles in the D&D website They have a 9th lvl spell that lets you time travel with 1,000 exp cost if you can find a flower growing on ground that has not been disturbed by sentient mortals. Then you can travel within the time frame of when you arrived and the period of time the immediate area has remained undisturbed. You can bring others along with similar limits as the Teleport spell. Another draw back is if you ever see yourself while in the past you/you go berserk and try to kill each other. This can be cool with pocket gardens and hidden sanctuary's tended by elementals or constructs. If you have seen the TV show 7 Days you could do things like that. |
| WarsawAtWork07-26-06, 04:05 AM | 3.) Create a dedicated wright (it an homoculus from Ebberon)This is the key. Get or make one of those (can you just buy one?) and then stick it into a portable hole where it can make items for you. Without a portable hole you could also setup a home base and teleport back and forth. Maybe make a Teleport 2/day item. Warsaw |
| Purple Yin07-26-06, 04:52 AM | you cant buy one- they're made with the crafters blood, and have a telepathic connection with the crafter. |
| SurfingMonkey07-26-06, 12:09 PM | I will look into the planes/timeflow. I had not thought of that. Thanks! But I doubt I can "make" or find such a plane if it is not allready in the books? The Epic Feat looks like the most practical option within the frame of my DM's game. Can you tell me more about this feat? I dont have the book, yet... :) |
| Echo_that_Pains07-26-06, 12:39 PM | Demiplanes are finite amounts of space that are tailored by the "creator" of the plane. I do not recall what it requires to create a demiplane, but there is no limit to how many of these are in existence or the effects on each. As i said, the creator is the one that dictates the specifics. EDIT: Thought of a campaign that was run with a demiplane that i thought i would post. Very cool idea that drove us (the players) nuts. Epic sorcerer/demilich created a demiplane. Apparently we had foiled it/its servants in times/levels past and as one of the group members used the teleport/dimension door/gate/i-dont-remember spell we ended up there. To make it more believeable we landed in the exact location/surroundings that we wanted to only on this demiplane. The real nasty part about this plane is the lich that was constantly scrying on us was messing with the plane layout to just screw with us. The area was based on the Material Plane (day, night, gravity, wind, storms, etc) so we didnt know that there was much difference and were able to use things such as the sun for directional pointers. Well, when we would cross a major river (very time consuming) we would turn around to continue on and all of the sudden there would be another river there just like the one we had crossed. We look behind us and the river was gone as if we had just come to it to start with. To make things more irritating for us, since this is a plane itself the detect magic showed us nothing when it was used to catch the Illusionary Terrain type spell. Eventually we found out what was going on and left the plane. It was an incredible campaign and had so many suprises that it kept the entire group together for the entire thing as well as brought a bunch of others in. |

I do not recall what it requires to create a demiplane, but there is no limit to how many of these are in existence or the effects on each. As i said, the creator is the one that dictates the specifics. You can create demiplanes using the 9th-level genesis spell (or psionic power of the same name). At least one PrC has the ability as well, though I forget what it's called. However, there are some limits on the planar traits which the caster can mold into a demiplane. In particular, unless I'm mistaken the time is locked to "Normal Time": you can't use Flowing Time to speed up or slow down time that way. Cheating time in D&D is certainly possible. It's just very difficult. The easiest method is probably be working in the Far Realm (which uses Flowing Time such that one minute in the Far Realm = no time in the Material Plane). However, the Far Realm is just a little unsafe. |
| shruggar07-26-06, 03:24 PM | Can you tell me more about this feat? I dont have the book, yet... :) http://www.d20srd.org |
| Harrowdroth07-26-06, 08:23 PM | Some of these may not work, depending on how strict your DM is, and if He/she will allow epic spells,Also What level is your Character. 1: Craft an epic spell that slows time, (Epic Level handbook) However you Will need your dms aproval. 2: Next time you and your group sit down to play wait until a good time and ask if they could Relaxe the speed of the campaign enough for you to craft you'r "Item". (However the other players may not apreciate this.) 3: Find a new Group. (Not my fave.) 4: Don't Craft the "Item". -- Lord Harrowdroth of thay |
| Thane2642507-26-06, 09:24 PM | You could always pay a craftsman to make the base item, thus saving some time. For that matter, if you could find a strong enough caster who would be willing and able to make the item for you, you could pay them to do it. Payment probably wouldn't be GP, but would be a quest of some kind or a trade of other magic items or spells, etc. This is also useful if you want an item made that you can't make for whatever reason. |
| SurfingMonkey07-27-06, 08:45 AM | I am not high level enough to use epic stuff. My character is a Level 1 Fighter, 6 Wizard, 4 Eldrich Knight. I have allready tried the obvious "Hey team! Can we park here for a week?" they reply "Stay if you want we are going to that dungeon we heard of". My DM is verry stern about his campain setting, he will not deveate with improvisation. So I can only wait until the day I can cast level 9 spells. |
| Veomyr07-27-06, 11:01 AM | http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/buildingCharacters/craftPoints.htm It's another idea, and may be worth looking into. |
| Unsidhe07-27-06, 12:50 PM | First of all, from the SRD, with the important part highlighted The caster works for 8 hours each day. He cannot rush the process by working longer each day. But the days need not be consecutive, and the caster can use the rest of his time as he sees fit. If time is still a factor, you have a level 9 caster level, so make a stand. "We stop here for a week to do magic reseach or no teleports to the next dungeon!". Or "You guys go ahead, I'll catch up... (a week later you have safely teleported to the sight in question ahead of your party)". Its your character, and as long as you are not hurting the group... actually, your extra magic punch should help them out in a pinch. Keep in mind, if you have the creation feats, which the GM let you take, it would be like telling the bard "you have stage fright and can't play bardic music this round", or the cleric "sorry, this undead is agnostic, you cant turn it". If he's adamant, you might want to swap out the feat to a more practical one. Edit: BTW, what kind of stick in the mud DM does not encourage improvisation!? I bet its an older brother, or a comic store guy clone. |
| Arvagor07-27-06, 01:51 PM | The Astral Plane is "Timeless", meaning time appears to flow normally but effects dependent on time (like thirst, hunger, aging, disease, and poison) do not progress until one leaves the plane (at which point it occurs retroactively. three weeks worth of poison damage hurts ;) )Not all Timeless planes have the retroactive effect, and I don't believe the Astral Plane is one of them. I.e., you can spend 1000 years on the Astral plane (as you perceive it), but that doesn't necessarily mean that when you return to the Material, you instantly crumble to dust, simply that your aging, healing, etc., starts up again. There are no examples of Flowing Time in the basic planes.Manual of the Planes does, however, describe three alternate planes with the flowing time trait -- the Region of Dreams, the Plane of Faerie, and the Far Realms (whether they are considered standard or not is up to your DM). It was recently argued that the 9th level Genesis spell would allow one to create a plane with Flowing Time...Where is this spell? Or are you referring to the 9th-level psionic power? If the latter, the power description specifically states, "You can’t manipulate the time trait on your demiplane; its time trait is as the Material Plane." |
| SurfingMonkey07-28-06, 12:02 PM | Yeah I have not chosen my new level 5 spells yet. And I am considering Teleport specificaly for the time saved during traveling. But I realy dont know what to pick! Its the first time I play a Wizard that reaches this level. I neglected taking Darkvision earlyer in the game. And I am considering taking it now. But it pains me to spend one of my new spells like that. Anyways, thank you all for the good advice. I will talk with my DM about the plains you mentioned. But the fact is that we are not kids anymore and the DM hase a job and a girl freind. So I think the "plain thing" will be just too much for him. But I have a game I am DM'ing and I will check out the plane stuff for my players. :) |
