I know that somewhere there's a magic spell that allows you to turn currency into different values e.g. 10,000 copper pieces could be changed into 10 platinum ones. I know its a real spell since someone else commented on it without my raising it first however I can't remember which book its in and haven't been able to find it in my searching. I was hoping someone would recognize it and tell me where to direct my search e.g. 1st ed players book. Any help would be appreciated.

That sounds like one of the many 2nd edition spells that were written up.

It is definitely not a 1st edition, and not a WoTC 3.0 or 3.5 edition spell, but it might be a 3rd party 3.0 or 3.5 spell.

As the old DM saying goes: if you want it, make it. :D

ummm, that what level should be?

it is kinda like a godly useful cantrip, so can be perfectly level 1...

I would add the power for also getting valuable gems from lesser ones (always keeping the same market value).

1st level? Don't make me laugh. That is a level 4 spell.

Too much treasure is spread throughout too many adventures in intentially useless form. That is a major plot thing for the DM, allowing wonderfull over-flowing descriptions, without suddenly granting the players a windfall of too much treasure. Furthermore you apparently counter DM's use of different cuurency and requireing currency conversion.

To duplicate the effects that you want using WoTC written 3.5 spells you need:

5th level spell Fabricate to move all those coins into one block of copper/silver etc.
3rd level spell Shrink Item, to make it portable.

Just because something is not for combat does not mean it is weak Teleport is not usefull for combat usually, but it is a huge time saver, like your spell. Notice Teleport is a 5th level spell.

I made a 4th level spell that turns the copper into gems. Because I made the gems usable as spell components, I had to offer a 50% cost. Because you are not creating gems, just smaller amounts of coins, I could possibly see not having the 50% cost. But even so, you still need limits, I would probably require 1 casting to handle no more than 10,000 coins.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a cantrip or 1st level spell. Hmmm well I'll have a look at my 2nd ed stuff then. Anyway how do these two sound if I'm making it? Excuse my rather poor attempt at writing it up.

Exchange
Transmutation.
Level: 4th
Casting Time: 10 minutes.
Duration: Instantaneous
Target: 1 coin or pile of coins (1,000 + 1,000/level)

By means of this spell you convert coins into a differing value currency. For example a gold piece could be exchanged for 10 silver pieces. This spell allows currency to be exchanged for lower level currency of equal value or higher level currency worth 60% of the total value going up by 1% a level to a maximum of 80%.

Convert
Transmutation.
Level: 8th
Casting Time: 10 minutes.
Duration: Instantaneous
Target: 1 item

By means of this spell you can convert any item that doesn't possess an intelligence or wisdom score into apropriate currency or you can convert coins to gems and vice versa. This spell returns currency valued at 60% of the items value increasing by 1% every level to a maximum of 80%. If used to convert one form of currency to another then it exchanges it at a 100% value. For example if cast on a longsword worth 100gp by a 17th level wizard you would receive 77 gold pieces which with a second casting of the spell could be turned into 7 platinum pieces and 7 gold pieces.

Of course I'd probably need to figure out how heightened and diminished versions work in an aracana unearthed setting.

Perhaps you are talking about a 3.0 Psionic Power, not revised in the 3.5.
I just can't remeber its name, but i'm sure it worked that way,but it costs XP.

From the 3.0 SRD:
Matter Rearrangement
Psychokinesis (Con)
Level: Psion 5
Display: Ma
Manifestation Time: 1 action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: Nonmagical metal objects weighing up to a total of 1/10 pound, each no more than 1 inch from another
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Power Resistance: No
Power Points: 9, XP cost
The manifester can transmute one metal into another. The power can affect a metal object up to 1/10 pound, or several metal objects whose total weight does not exceed 1/10 pound. In practical terms, 1/10 pound equals five standard coins.
XP Cost: The XP cost equals the gp value of the newly transmuted metal, or a minimum of 1 XP.
