Can a Familiar always locate its master?

If not always, then can a Familiar find its master so long as they are in-range for the empathic link (1-mile)?

I would think a Familiar could detect the changing strength/weakness of the empathic bond, and use that change to zero-in on the master's position.

By the same reasoning, I would think a master could do the same thing to find his Familiar.

No.
Only if the master is conscious / aware of surroundings.
Not by anything ever printed.
Nope.

Moral of the story: Don't lose your familiar. :D

So, if the master is conscious/aware of his surroundings, the familiar can find him?

And, I didn't lose my familiar :) Most of our party got captured, but my familiar is with the rest of the party, within one mile. I'm wondering if the familiar can lead the rest of the party to rescue those who got captured.

So, if the master is conscious/aware of his surroundings, the familiar can find him?As long as you are close enough for the "empathic link" to work, then yes. At least, that's how I would rule it. Some DMs might say that if you don't know where you are, your familiar won't know either. :D
