Can a wizard summon monsters not of his alignment? Are there any penalties?

Can, for instance, a Lawful Good Wizard summon a Chaotic Evil creature, or a Chaotic Neutral Wizard summon a Lawful creature?

Yes, and as long as they use them according to their alignment, there is no penalty. Clerics and druids, on the other hand, can't.

Thank you.

Are there any relevant ruling pages you can point me to for support (when the inevitable disagreement comes within our group) :)

It can be done - there is no prohibition against it for Arcane casters (though there IS for Divine casters), but the act of summoning a Chaotic Evil creature is Chaotic Evil, the act of summoning a Lawful Neutral creature is Lawful, and so on. Every summoning spell description states this.

Therefore summoning creatures of a particular alignment WILL cause the caster to trend towards that alignment. Depending on how he uses them and what else he does, this will not necessarily lead to actual alignment change, but summoning Evil creatures IS an Evil act. There is absolutely no room to question this within the rules.

P.S. The Planar Binding spells are an interesting case because they require a Magic Circle spell of the opposite alignment as well... so summoning a Devil involves a Lawful Evil spell AND an either Chaotic or Good spell. An interesting inconsistency.

Edit: see this thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=183198) for more discussion.

So alternate your celestial badgers with fiendish dire weasels for a neutral outlook... :D (At least if your DM is pressing the issue, IMO summoning a celestial badger to fight for you is no more good/evil than summoning a fiendish snake to do the same...)

You won't find a rule that says they can. It is the absence of any prohibition that says they can, especially when given the prohibition explicitly stated for divine casters.

Whether casting spells with the [evil] descriptor makes you evil or not -- that is another question altogether.

............Can a wizard summon monsters not of his alignment? Are there any penalties?..........

This is not overly covered in the books, except for the general alignment stuff. Otherwise it depends on the type of good you belive in.......

Type 1-You may never, never, ever even look like you may have done something wrong, let alone evil. You may not lie, even about the smallest thing. You must be good 24/7, and if not you are harshly cast out, with no mercy and no second chances.
Type 2-You must only be good about 75% of the time, for 75% of things. Minor lies and other such acts are ok, as long as they don't hurt anyone or do evil. Often this type of good will simply 'look the otherway' or 'not see something' that while not overly evil, is not overly good too.
Type 3-Anything goes. As long as you are doing good, you can get away with just about anything. Many of the type 1 and 2 type will consider you evil.

A type 3 folk can get away with summon evil things for good acts, using a demon as a decoy or such. A type 2 can get away with 'every so often' calling up an evil creature for a good act..but general only for extreme times. A type 1 can never summon one.
