| ZDB04-16-08, 01:21 PM | Hi everyone, the thing goes like this: 1) Mage armor is a LvL 1 spell right? and it only bestows a +4AC bonus. I want to create a spell, that gives me the same armor bonus, but it also creates the "illusion" of an armor. I donŽt know hot to make this, the spell will summon a magical armor that works exactly like mage armor but also can be seen, touched, smelled, like iŽm wearing a real armor. How can i do that? how the new spell would be? |
| jaelis04-16-08, 02:19 PM | I'd make a new 1st level spell that acts like disguise self, but has a duration of 1 hour/level and is limited to changing the appearance of your apparel. Then just cast it and mage armor together. Hmm, but you want it to fool all the senses... with no will (disbelief) save? I think that's getting up to a level 2 spell, or down to 10 min/level duration. |
| ZDB04-16-08, 02:53 PM | It`s not that i want to fool anyone. The story goes like this: He is a fighter, who has discovered his aptitude for magic (multiclassed to fght/wiz) and started to cast. But soon he found out about the penalties to casting produced by armors. So he started using mage armor and no physical armor. But he complains (his character) that is not the same he feels naked. So he wants to create a new spell (all in one spell) that reproduces the effect of mage armor and also creates the illusion of an armor, that feels like a real armor. Do i make myself clear? |

Do i make myself clear? it's just fluf so why not say that mage armor does that +4 is a chain **** so your mage armor might by a scintillant shirt that looks like metal |
| Seeker9504-16-08, 03:28 PM | Get a glamered robe, and just make it take on the appearance of armor most of the time. If it works to make armor look like a tuxedo, it can make a tuxedo look like armor. :D |
| forsaken111104-16-08, 03:34 PM | Do some ingame research per the rules to design a new spell (or pay a wizard ingame to develop it). Its a level 1 dual school spell of the conjuration/illusion schools. It lasts 1 hour/level, gives +4 ac, and creates the visual and tactile illusion of appropriate armor. When someone interacts with the armor (as by touching it), they get a will save as normal. If they make the save, they see the armor as a force effect as described under mage armor, rather than a chain shirt or whatever illusion you pick. To balance it out, have a slightly expensive material component, like 5gp worth of ground silver filings. Alternatly, buy some Bracers of Armor +4 and have the "Glamored" armor enchantment put on them. Per the item compendium, bracers of armor can accept armor enchantments. That way you have an always-active illusion of whatever outfit you want. Never wear clothes again! |
| groveborn04-16-08, 04:53 PM | D&D allows some fluff when describing spell effects, and there is little reason not to allow mage armor to give the illusion of armor. In fact, it's perfectly reasonable to do so. |

In fact, it's perfectly reasonable to do so. Ultimatly its up to your DM. I see an illusion as a separate spell effect personally, not as some fluff you could slap on. I would, however, allow you to take the spell thematics feat to make all your spell effects look like mundane weapons/armor, etc. (Fireball is a flaming sword or something) and in that case your mage armor would have the appearance of steel armor without an illusion or will save or anything. |

In fact, it's perfectly reasonable to do so. Personally, I disagree. Disguising a wizard to look like a fighter is a valuable ability, and I think this would enhance the power of the spell more than is fair. |
| ZDB04-16-08, 05:18 PM | Many thanks to you all! IŽll try all your ideas and see wich one he likes the most. Now another question! 2) Vampiric Touch: basically you touch someone and draw some HP and transfer it to you, right? So could i use this spell to emulate the effect of kainŽs blood drain (Legacy of kain series) at a distance? The fact that you use ir at a distance will rise the level of the spell? or something like that? |

| DraconsNighthawk04-16-08, 07:45 PM | Mage Armor is a Conjuration spell. Conjuration summon things into reality. It is perfectly reasonable to say your mage armor has a visible effect on you. I typically have my look like a faint purple sheen. As for the vampiric touch, 5th level seems fair. |

I would submit that a 'visible effect' such as a faint purple sheen is quite different from an illusion which looks, sounds, and feels like real armor. |
| sblaxman04-17-08, 01:59 PM | Silent image is a lvl 1 spell... Mage armor is a lvl 1 spell. A combined version I'd place at lvl 3 (a spell mimicing two spells is usually their lvls added +1)... but if I was generous and knew you were using it for character and not advantage I'd put it at lvl 2. If you want it to have a "touch/smell" of armor, lvl 3 or 4... if just the visual, lvl 2-3 |
| ZDB04-17-08, 04:52 PM | Allright iŽll make it LvL 3. Because honestly... a fighter with STR 17 and a non-friendly face does not look good on a robe right? :P |
| Wheldrake04-17-08, 05:27 PM | Who needs armor? Conan fought bare-chested most of the time, eh? And what about Indiana Jones? Get a funky belt, wear crossed weapon belts across your chest, bristling with weapons. Dump the armor trope, it's overrated anyway. Or go for the funky animal skin robe. http://www.fantasy.fr/news/upload/actu/20070813-Conan-Barbare.jpg Cheers, --- Wheldrake |
| sblaxman04-17-08, 10:42 PM | Convo w/ my wife on 80's fantasy art wife: why are all the women half naked? me: dunno, why are the men half naked? wife: oh yeah... I guess that's fair...why do none of the men have body hair? me: dunno, maybe conan waxes... |
