the metamagic feat chain spell says that you can apply it to
1) a spell with one target
2) you choose the secondary targets as you like

now does summon monster fullfil this criteria ? (you cant use the variant to summon 1d3 or 1d4+1 creatures of a lower level for this purpose)

1) summon monster states "effect: one summoned creature" [not: "target: one summoned creature" ]
2) is it legal to call the new creatures that you will summon targets ? cause they dont exist at the time you have to specify the secondary targets. or can you say that the new targets are the spaces were the creautres will be summoned ?

so im under the impression that it will not work but id would be nice if it would. So what do you think about this ?

i think it wouldn't work, because you have no target.

So, you cannot chain the spell!

You cannot chain a spell without target. So simple :D

perhaps the summoned monster could be seen as the target. This is the basic question i think.

you do not summon a creature on a creature... so the summoned creature cannot be counted as a target!
Also, you need to have a target before you use the spell, so before the first creature summoned appears... so where is your target... there isn't any...

following those thoughts, summon monster is NOT able to be chained.

The summoned creature is not the a target, it is an effect. The two are different things entirely in terms of game mechanics. As such, it would not work.

Actually you have to target a point in space where you want the creature to appear, but since the spell has an Effect but no Target entry in spell description, it can't be chained.
