Can the bonus from Amulet of Natural Armor stack with your original natural armor? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Last night, some friend argued that the bonus from Amulet of Natural Armor can stack with your natural armor. My first reaction is it's impossible, and my reasoning is they are the same bonus, which means they can not stack with each other, and the only thing we can do is to pick up the highest one.

But then I read the relevant description on SRD, and I found the following:
Amulet of Natural Armor: This amulet, usually crafted from bone or beast scales, toughens the wearer’s body and flesh, giving him an enhancement bonus to his natural armor bonus of from +1 to +5, depending on the kind of amulet.

I am confused by this sentence. What does it mean? Is my friend right?
Let's assume that you have a +1 natural armor before you put on the +5 Amulet of Natrual Armor, then after you put it on, what is gonna happen to your natural armor? Does it become +5 or +6?
Thanks!

Your friend is right. Your natural armor becomes +6.

Yeah, this one is written a bit ambiguously, but it looks that way.

Which is kind of odd and same typed bonuses usually don't stack.

it is not odd at all, and is not ambigious, it was expressly rewritten in 3.5 to allow it to stack with already existing natural armor bonuses, it works just like the "enhancement bonus" on magical armor increases the armors armor bonus, or the way the "enhancement bonus" on a magic shield increases the shields shield bonus. the amulet of natural armor increases the wearers natural armor bonus (creature with out listed natrural armor bonuses, such as the standard PC races, are considered to have natural armor 0)

It is not odd at all.
The magic of an armor enhancement bonus stacks with the bonus of armor.
The magic of a natural armor enhancement bonus stacks with the bonus of natural armor.

The Amulet adds to your Natural Armor.

Your Natural Armor adds to your AC.

There's no stacking issue, because they're adding to different values.

Barkskin has the same mechanics, and are written more clearly. So it's not a 'natural armor bonus' it's an 'enhancement bonus to natural armor'. So if you turn into a creature with natural armor it would stack, or if you could find some divine/circumstance/luck etc... bonus to natural armor it would stack also.

"The enhancement bonus provided by barkskin stacks with the target’s natural armor bonus, but not with other enhancement bonuses to natural armor. A creature without natural armor has an effective natural armor bonus of +0."

Barkskin has the same mechanics, and are written more clearly."How is barkskin's description any clearer than that for the amulet of natural armor: enhancement bonus to his natural armor bonus?

I'm not claiming that barkskin is unclear; just that the amulet is equally clear.

When you blokes put it that way, yeah, it is pretty clear. I guess I made the mistake of thinking about "natural armor" as a non-natural thing, ie only available from a magical source. Damn me and my AD&D thinking processes!
