Can the spell, tongues, allow a person to speak druidic?

This spell grants the creature touched the ability to speak and understand the language of any intelligent creature, whether it is a racial tongue or a regional dialect.

Since druids are intelligent creatures, yes, you can speak and understand druidic.

but would druidic count as a racial tongue or a regional dialect?

Better question, would an amulet of tongues qualify you for entry into that Druid/Bard PrC?

Like, cast tongues on yourself, then permanency, then write a dictionary Common - Druidic and Druidic - Common.

Screw them druids!

And then get screwed by that 21 level angry druid and his even more angry bear :D

You mean the level 21 angry druid who IS an angry bear.

But really, how would said druid know unless you started trying to send this all around? An epic level druid certainly has better things to do with his time.

So, is druidic a racial tongue or a regional dialect?

It doesn't have to be either. The language is

"This spell grants the creature touched the ability to speak and understand the language of any intelligent creature, whether it is a racial tongue or a regional dialect."

"whether" is equivalent to "even if" in this sitation. The word introduces alternatives, but I don't believe the alternatives introduced by "whether" is ever meant to be an inclusive list.

It's helping define the nature of the spell in that you don't get just the over-arcing language, but the regional or racial versions of it as well.

Thats actually not a bad plot hook, angry druids go on a ramapge, killing anyone they believe has read any part of the book.

It's certainly not a dialect; it's a language. I would call it an organizational language.

Although some would say it doesn't agree with the RAW text of the spell, I've always interpreted tongues functionality as, once the spell is active and you start speaking to a creature, the spell's effect translates what you're saying into that creature's native/preferred language, and when it speaks, you hear it in your preferred/native language.

In other words, the spell doesn't give you instant knowledge of every language that ever existed, just "you speak, they understand; they speak, you understand."

Under this interpretation, Druidic safely remains the province of druids. ;)

I'm sure there are ways non-Druish can learn to speak Druish ... they're just kind of difficult to work. :)

I'm sure there are ways non-Druish can learn to speak Druish ... they're just kind of difficult to work. :)Well, sure there is... Have a druid teach it to you! :P

Seriously, there's nothing that prevents a druid from teaching it to someone else; the PHB text only says, "Druids are forbidden to teach this language to nondruids," and "forbidden" doesn't necessarily mean "prevented from".

Now, if said druid does end up teaching the language to a non-druid, I, as a DM, am not responsible for whatever nastiness is unleashed upon said druid from there on out... :schemes:

The text also says that any Druid who teaches a non-Druid the language becomes an "Ex-Druid," losing all his spells and special abiilities (exept for weapon, armor and shield proficiencies), so the nastiness is built into the rules.

I always have used the spell like the equivalent in movies and cartoon, where when affected with an item/potion/spell that allows to comunicate with other people then these people starts to talk in your language and when you talk to them with your language they can understand you.

Since it is magic no rational way of work it is needed.
