i was recently considering buying a ring of three wishes. would it be possible to use one of those wishes to add the half elemental template to my human druid??? or two or all three wishes???

In my games, if I allowed the wish to do this at all, I would not allow a single wish to add more than +1 LA to any character. It would take all three wishes to add the +3 LA from the half-elemental template.

However, that is in my games. This question needs to be brought to your DM since s/he is the final arbitor of these types of questions.

Thanks,

i thought of this last night. wondered if t was possible.. but i do like the idea of the +1 LV adjustment per wish.. seems reasonable.

While Wish has more definition in 3rd Edition than it's had in the entire history of Dungeons & Dragons, it's still a pretty open-ended spell. The only real hard and fast rule about it is this: It can do whatever the Dungeon Master says it can do. If your Dungeon Master says it can be used to add the half-elemental template to your character, then it can do so. If you're the Wizard casting the spell, drop your 5,000 XP and let your will be done. If you're using an item, consider yourself fortunate that someone else already paid the 5,000 XP cost.

For me, personally, I don't allow players to add templates to their characters, aside from certain exceptions (like the Dragon Disciple, which at least makes you wait 10 levels before you actually get to add "half dragon" to your character, or the Monk, which makes you wait 20 levels before you become an Outsider). There's a reason the templates were put in the Monster Manual instead of the Player's Handbook, or even the Dungeon Master's Guide: Because they weren't meant for players. If your Dungeon Master is running a variant game where they're available, then that's fine, if you're all having fun with the game that way. For me, that's just too much power in the hands of a PC, when magic and whatnot, just using the Core Rules, gives them more than enough power as it is.

I'd actually allow it but with a stipulation. In order to keep party balance, but let you have your power, I'd say you lost life energy during the change. Your knowledge of fighting, or magecraft, or what have you is siphoned away as you become one with the element of flame. In that way you'd lose three levels to make up for your +3 ECL. Balanced and makes sense, can't get that energy from nowhere, right?
