| Jack Greylock07-04-05, 04:42 PM | Spoiler alert: (if you are playing through The Temple of Elemental Evil, do not read.) So this came up just yesterday while we were storming the top of the center tower in the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil campaign. The Half Elemental Thurge was within a Forbiddance zone of her own creation. I used a banishment scroll along with an earth holy symbol to banish her from this plane. The DM allowed it at the time but later was unsure that it was the right call. He has allowed it in the end, cause we not going to replay the encounter. But it did bring up an interesting question. Forbiddance blocks all planer travel into or out of the area of the spell. So would that block her travel out of it, even though it was not voluntary on her part and she is being forced out? |
| MrkGrismer07-05-05, 08:24 AM | I believe that would be a DMs call. No Planar Blocks stop a summoned creature from returning to its own plane at the end of the spell. Forbiddance (the spell) does not block travel out of it: Forbiddance seals an area against all planar travel into or within it. |

Forbiddance (the spell) does not block travel out of it: I agree with the DM's call. Forbiddance protects against teleportation effects and the other spells detailed in its description. Banishment is not a teleportation effect or otherwise an effect stopped by forbiddance, so it works. |

| primemover00307-05-05, 04:32 PM | Forbiddance blocks ALL planar travel. No Summoning (and thus no dismissal/banishment), no Teleporting (through the astral), no ethereal jaunt, no shadow walk (or shadow jump), no planar travel whatsoever IN or OUT. |
| Jack Greylock07-05-05, 04:54 PM | I don’t know Primemover003 the more I look at the exact wording of the spell the more I think you could. Here is the exact description: “Forbiddance seals an area against all planar travel into or within it. This includes all teleportation spells (such as dimension door and teleport), plane shifting, astral travel, ethereal travel, and all summoning spells. Such effects simply fail automatically.” You’ll notice it very specifically calls out travel into or within but doesn’t mention travel out. It then goes on to detail specific spells that will not work in it. At no time are either Dismissal or Banishment mentioned. Now maybe they just forgot to mention these spells, but that seems odd since they mention a slew of other very specific spells, why wouldn’t they mention dismissal or banishment. |
| primemover00307-05-05, 05:01 PM | The words Within it mean within the boundaries of the Forbiddance... meaning if you're standing inside the spells area you are completely cut off from any extraplanar connections. Can you banish a creature that has Dimensional Anchor on it? |
| Jack Greylock07-05-05, 05:28 PM | Actually Dimensional Anchor calls it out specifically. “Also, dimensional anchor does not prevent summoned creatures from disappearing at the end of a summoning spell.” So I would say yes. |
