| Hazblade07-01-05, 01:04 PM | I was having a "friendly" discussion with my DM about Twin spell and Quickened spell. Can you use both these feats to cast 3 spells on the same round? |
| He Who Lurks07-01-05, 01:20 PM | Casting a Twinned spell is a standard action (if the spell normally has a casting time of one standard action) and a Quickened spell is a swift action, so you can cast both of them in the same round. Remember, however, that a Twinned spell repeats on the following round, so the first round you only get two. The next round, you could cast a standard action spell and a Quickened spell, which combined with the Twinned spell that repeats that round, would net you three. There is an epic feat that lets you cast more than one Quickened spell in a round, as well. *Edit: Pretend I said Repeat spell instead of Twin spell. |
| Jaid07-01-05, 01:24 PM | Pretty sure you're thinking of repeat spell, he who lurks. i believe twin spell works in the same round. |
| He Who Lurks07-01-05, 01:42 PM | Yep, you're right. Twinned spells do take affect simultaneously. In that case, yes. You could "cast" three spells in a round if you cast a Twinned spell (standard action) and a Quickened spell (swift action) in the same round. |
| Arishem07-01-05, 01:53 PM | Just a side note, Quicken spell makes it a Free Action, not a swift. there is a subtle differance in certain game mechanics |
| tarkin07-01-05, 02:05 PM | No there is not. When they came out with Swift Actions, they reclassified Quickened spells as a Swift Action. ---------------- Also note, you can do more than 3. Check out Shapechange to a Choker, Time Stop, and Contigency. There is no set limit to how many spells per round you can cast in 3.0 or 3.5 |
| Polaris07-01-05, 02:09 PM | Guys, Yes you can cast three per round and possibly more. Step 1: shapechange into a choker. A choker gets an extra standard action per round, so now you can cast three spells per round (2 normal and one quickened) with impunity. -Polaris |
| Dunelord07-01-05, 02:17 PM | No there is not. When they came out with Swift Actions, they reclassified Quickened spells as a Swift Action. No they didn't. |
| Dragonsblood07-01-05, 02:18 PM | Don't forget Timestop. |
| Arishem07-01-05, 02:24 PM | No they didn't. Actually he is right, i never noticed that part of the swift description i guess. But i dug out my Minatures Book, flipped to page 29 and sure enough. It says quickened spells is a swift action now. |
| Zherog07-01-05, 02:28 PM | No they didn't. Yes, they did. It's most definitely mentioned in Complete Arcane. Possibly in other books, as well. |
| Lord Schpungus07-01-05, 03:50 PM | There's no change in how Quicken works, only the terminology. |
| Arishem07-01-05, 04:51 PM | We'll not in the way it feat works, but if it was still a Free Action , you could also do another swift spell thus casting 4 spells in a round, but since it was changed to a swift, that stops you from casting another swift spell. |
| Polaris07-01-05, 05:00 PM | Arishem, Back in the day, there was also an explicit caveat written into quicken spell that said you couldn't quicken more than one spell in a round. That restriction was removed because changing to a swift action automatically included this restriction. -Polaris |
| Arishem07-01-05, 05:25 PM | True, but if they had left quicken as a free spell and still had that caveat that you can only quicken 1 spell per round. There are still spells that have a normal casting time of swift without using quicken. So i was just saying its a good thing they made it swift instead of leaving it as free with the restriction still for quickened spells of 1/round. |
| Seeker9507-01-05, 07:11 PM | True, but if they had left quicken as a free spellBut they didn't, so it is a pointless conclusion. And with the choker example you could conceivably fire off five spells in a round, so long as the two spells you prepare are both twinspells! |
| IceFractal07-01-05, 09:28 PM | Six spells, actually, if you make the quickened one twin as well. Of course, that would be using a ninth level slot to cast two of a first level spell, but I never claimed it was a good idea, just possible. |
| The Simbul07-02-05, 01:11 AM | Well technically casting a Twinned Spell is still casting only one spell, it just takes effect twice. This is an important difference when it comes to things like counterspells and other factors. As for Shapechanging into Chokers and other creatures who get extra actions, I houseruled that creatures with such abilities instead can just make a standard action or move-action as a swift action instead, thus preventing them from bypassing the normal spells per round limit. |
| DisposableHero_07-02-05, 01:30 AM | In eberron the existence of action points (and action surge) make it possible to up this number even more. The combination of magic and psionics (probably via the cerebromancer PrC) allows the addition of schism, fission, and contingent and/or twin synchronicity to yield still more spells in a single round. Simbul's Spell Matrix, Spell Trigger, and Spell Sequencer from PGtF would let you discharge numerous additional spells in a round. If you count twin spells and setting up repeat spells in previous rounds I would estimate you could probably break 30 spells in one round. |
| cowdragon07-02-05, 02:17 AM | magical gattling guns!!! :) The Cowdragon :mage: |
| DisposableHero_07-02-05, 02:21 AM | Yep, just a shame how quickly they run out of ammo :D |
| cowdragon07-02-05, 04:20 AM | Yeah, I once had a two-headed DD who could cast two twinned spells/round and had Arcane Preperation and could Quicken another. It was very cool to hit people with that kind of firepower. My all time best? I cast 5 Darkbolts(the spell from Vile Darkness, not the updated one) at an epic wizard. He had to roll something like 28 saves or be stunned. He rolled a couple 1's. Then he was MINE!!!. Fun. The Cowdragon :mage: |
| Seeker9507-02-05, 08:40 AM | As for Shapechanging into Chokers and other creatures who get extra actions, I houseruled that creatures with such abilities instead can just make a standard action or move-action as a swift action instead, thus preventing them from bypassing the normal spells per round limit. In this, TheSimbul is wise. :tiphat: |
| CaoSlayer07-02-05, 10:35 AM | let me see... using all the available posible ways: previous: contigence (+1) or chain contigence(+3 spells) transform into choker 1º quicken spell: obvious one. (one spell) 2º twin spell or the feat to use two rods in one round, repeat with the second action of the chocker (five spells) 3º your familiar uses a wondrous item casting a spell (six spells) 4º you own an inteligent item who also uses a spell (seven spell) 5º you have trigged the contigence (eight or ten spells) ten spells a round... no bad. |
